James Maddison suffers devastating injury blow as Tottenham secure historic win at Chelsea

But Spurs went on to win the game without one of their key men, making history with a 2-0 victory away at rivals Chelsea

At the start of the second half, cameras cut to the Spurs midfielder being surrounded by some of his teammates on the pitch.

He then sat down on the grass, looking emotional and holding back tears as the realisation of another potential issue set in.

Maddison recently opened up to talkSPORT about the 'dark days' of his recovery from an ACL injury after making his first start in a competitive match since May 2025 on Monday.

As he left the pitch at Stamford Bridge, he was hugged by some Chelsea players as well as multiple Tottenham stars.

And even Blues boss Xabi Alonso gave him a hug as he walked, head down, off the grass and straight down the tunnel.

Thankfully, Maddison later came out of the dressing room and returned to the bench to celebrate the huge 2-0 victory.

Maddison injury update

Speaking post-match, De Zerbi gave an update on Maddison.

He told talkSPORT: "We have to manage Maddison like a diamond.

"He's a special player, but not just about his qualities, as a personality, as an experienced player.

"Now we have to make the medical check to understand what the problem is. But we need him, absolutely."

History made at Stamford Bridge

Losing Maddison would be a huge blow for Spurs of course, but they managed to end Saturday evening on a high.

De Zerbi's men went on to beat Chelsea 2-0, picking up just their second ever Premier League win at Stamford Bridge.

It was also their first victory while keeping a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge since December 1986.

An own goal from Blues goalkeeper Mike Penders and a late second from Mathys Tel made history for Tottenham.

The victory came against ten men in the end, as Cole Palmer was shown his first career red card after two yellows.

Chelsea have now received nine red cards in the Premier League since the start of last season, at least four more than any other side.
