Munster Rugby have broken their silence after Tadhg Furlong escaped a ban following his disciplinary hearing, with the province issuing a pointed statement in support of Gavin Coombes.

The Ireland prop was cleared of foul play on Thursday night following an incident during Leinster's 24-18 victory over Munster.

Coombes alleged that Furlong had grabbed him in the groin area during the first half at the Aviva Stadium.

The incident was reviewed by the television match official before Furlong was subsequently cited under Law 9.27.

However, an independent disciplinary committee unanimously dismissed the complaint, finding that the 33-year-old had not committed an act of foul play.

Munster have now responded, making it clear their support for Coombes remains unchanged.

Munster release statement

In a statement reported by RTÉ, the province said:

"Munster Rugby acknowledges the decision published on Thursday night by the Independent Disciplinary Committee."

"Gavin Coombes continues to have the full backing of the club."

Interim chief executive Avan Lee also appeared to take aim at public comments made during the disciplinary process.

"The priority this week was to back Gavin and for the club to stand behind him, and that position has not changed.

"We believe it is important that independent disciplinary proceedings are allowed to conclude without unhelpful commentary from people with a clear influence over public perception.

"Respect for that process, and consideration for everyone directly involved should be paramount."

Furlong available for Ireland

The comments follow public support for Furlong from former Ireland captain Johnny Sexton, who said earlier this week that he did not believe the prop would commit such an offence.

Munster did not identify anyone in their statement.

Importantly, the disciplinary committee also found that Coombes had given an honest account of his recollection of the incident.

It confirmed the complaint had been properly brought before the panel, despite ultimately clearing Furlong.

The decision means Furlong is available for Ireland's upcoming Nations Championship campaign.

Andy Farrell's side begin their November fixtures against Argentina, with the Leinster tighthead now free to feature.
