Manchester United hold internal talks over Cesc Fabregas move

Ahead of their clash with his former club Chelsea, Manchester United have held talks over appointing Cesc Fabregas as manager.

Manchester United hold internal talks over Cesc Fabregas move

Cesc Fabregas has emerged in Manchester United’s managerial discussions just nine days after his Como side humiliated Michael Carrick in the Champions League.

The Spaniard masterminded a devastating 4-1 victory over United on 21 October, exposing serious weaknesses in Carrick’s tactical approach.

Nico Paz scored twice and assisted Anastasios Douvikas, while Jacobo Ramon added a fourth before Joshua Zirkzee’s late consolation.

Como’s aggressive pressing repeatedly disrupted United’s build-up, with the Italian side completing 594 passes, the most against United in the competition since Barcelona in 2019.

Fabregas has built an impressive managerial reputation since retiring in 2023.

The former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder guided Como to fourth place in Serie A last season, securing Champions League qualification.

His possession-based football, coordinated pressing and ability to develop young players have attracted considerable attention.

United supporters will also remember Fabregas winning two Premier League titles at Chelsea, whom Carrick’s side visit on Saturday.

Despite securing third place last season, Carrick has won just two of United’s opening 12 matches this campaign.

Sunday’s 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth intensified pressure, with United’s hierarchy reportedly divided over potential replacements.

Fabregas was previously linked with the Old Trafford position in April, but fresh information has now emerged about his candidacy.

Cesc Fabregas could replace Michael Carrick

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking through GiveMeSport, Cesc Fabregas is among six managerial candidates discussed internally by Manchester United.

The shortlist also includes Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler.

However, Howe currently leads United’s thinking, with Nagelsmann considered the next strongest candidate.

Director of football Jason Wilcox prefers Premier League experience, while recruitment chief Christopher Vivell favours Nagelsmann.

Jacobs confirmed that Fabregas remains part of the conversation, although no direct negotiations with Como have been reported.

Carrick will manage Saturday’s Chelsea fixture, with a positive result potentially earning him further opportunities against Roma and Aston Villa.

United could reassess his future during November’s international break, leaving Fabregas among the names being considered should another managerial change become necessary.
