Claire Pease, Reese Esponda go 1-2 on floor, cap historic gymnastics worlds for U.S.

Claire Pease and Reese Esponda won gold and silver on floor exercise on the last day of the World Gymnastics Championships as three different Americans won individual gold for the first time in 15 years.

Pease, a 17-year-old in her World Championships debut, scored 13.866 points as the eighth and final gymnast to go in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

“I really controlled my power and settled into the podium landings,” Pease said.

Esponda, also a 17-year-old in her first worlds, tallied 13.566 after posting the best score in qualifying last week.

“I’m just really proud of my fight,” Esponda said. “I worked really hard. In team final, I didn’t have my best routine, so I put my best foot forward, and I was trying to work on all my landings, and I think I did a lot better today.”

Pease is the youngest American to win an individual world title since 2017 (Morgan Hurd, all-around) and the first American to win individual gold in her first worlds since Hurd.

The U.S. finished worlds with the most total medals (eight) and tied for the most golds (three).

It marked the third consecutive day that an American won a world title after Skye Blakely in the all-around on Friday and Frederick Richard on men’s floor on Saturday.

The last year that three different American gymnasts won individual world titles was 2011 — Jordyn Wieber in the all-around, McKayla Maroney on vault and Danell Leyva on parallel bars.

The last time two different American women won an individual world title was 2015 — Simone Biles in the all-around, balance beam and floor and Madison Kocian sharing uneven bars gold.

Pease, who trains outside Dallas, went from placing 10th in the 2025 U.S. Championships all-around to win a selection competition for this year’s world team last month. She also earned silver medals in the team event and on vault.

Esponda, who trains at the Biles-family owned gym in Spring, Texas — went from placing 16th at the 2025 U.S. Championships to making this year’s five-woman world team for her floor and vault prowess.

Also Sunday, Blakely finished sixth on beam, concluding a breakout meet that included gold in the all-around, silver in the team event and bronze on vault and bars.

Kaylia Nemour won beam on a tiebreaker with 2025 World champ Zhang Qingying of China, adding to her repeat world title on bars on Saturday.

Kaylia Nemour captured her first World Championship gold medal on balance beam, using an execution score of 8.266 to break a tie with Qingying Zhang after both posted a 14.566. Flavia Saraiva claimed bronze.

China’s Zou Jingyuan won the parallel bars title for a record-extending fifth time, in addition to his 2024 Olympic gold. Artur Davtyan of Armenia claimed his second world title on vault.

The next worlds in 2027 are in Chengdu, China, the last worlds before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
