Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to make a big decision ahead of IPL 2027 after announcing their coaching staff, and it is all about their next captain. With Hardik Pandya's future at the Mumbai Indians uncertain, they are reportedly looking at two options - bringing back Rohit Sharma as captain or handing over the responsibility to young batter Tilak Varma.
Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah are also experienced options, but India’s former T20I captain is in the later stage of his career, while the fast bowler is not expected to take up the additional burden of leading the team.
Although Mumbai Indians have not confirmed any trade offer for Hardik Pandya, there is growing talk that he might leave the franchise before the 2027 season. Even if he stays, the Indian all-rounder may not continue as the Mumbai Indians captain.
MI owner Akash Ambani, Rahul Sanghvi, and head coach Kieron Pollard will have to decide whether to trust the former India and Mumbai captains, Rohit, for one more season or start building a new team under Tilak Varma.
Hardik Pandya’s situation is still unclear. It is being said that there is a very strong possibility of a trade, but Hardik is ready to stay if MI does not find a suitable deal. He is expected to give his complete effort even if he loses the captaincy. But the decision will rest with the management.
The IPL source said as reported by PTI, “Hardik Pandya isn't a confrontational person. In case MI doesn't get a suitable trade for him, he will certainly stay back for a year and give his 110-120 percent. It won't matter if he is the captain or not; there will be no lack of commitment. But trade isn't something that is in his hands. It is up to MI ownership to see the pros and cons for any trade offer that comes along.”
Rohit Sharma looks like a strong option for the short term. He will turn 40 during IPL 2027 and could be playing his final season for Mumbai Indians. The experienced batter is also working hard to make it to the India squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
Despite being in the final stage of his career, Rohit’s experience and ability to lead a team remain valuable. Rohit has already guided MI to five IPL titles, and the franchise could once again turn to him during this important transition.
The senior opening batter has mostly played as an impact player in the last couple of seasons, but becoming captain would give MI more flexibility to use another player as an impact substitute. Amid this, Mumbai Indians announce Robin Uthappa as new batting coach ahead of IPL 2027.
Pollard's appointment as the head coach could also work in Rohit's favour. The legendary all-rounder was part of all five IPL title-winning campaigns under Rohit and understands his leadership better than most.
The two have shared several memorable comeback victories, and their experience could be important for MI in a season when the team is unlikely to undergo major changes. But Tilak Varma is also an incredible prospect for the future.
Mumbai Indians see him as a long-term leader and IPL 2027 could be the right opportunity to give him some experience before the mega auction in 2028. Tilak may also want to build a team of his choice at the auction and take charge with a fresh start.
