National League South: Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson praises side after emphatic Braintree win

Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson praised his side’s relentlessness after they thrashed Braintree Town 6-0 in the National League South.

Billy Clifford’s early opener and five goals from George Alexander fired the Town to an emphatic victory in front of a crowd of 621 on a wet and windy afternoon at The Memorial Ground.

“It was a great afternoon,” said Johnson. “I thought some of the football we played in the first half was excellent.

“Credit to the boys. We've had a little bit of a break, so I told them before the game we should be fresh and I want us to go out the blocks, really turn it on, be brave with the ball and be comfortable on it, and they delivered.

“Miles Obodo and George Alexander were a real handful up top – they clicked straight away. We brought George in knowing he's a goalscorer, and with his movement in the box from the first crosses he was in for a good day.

“George is a proper goalscorer and a proper number nine. We're lucky that we’ve got him. All his goals were in the six-yard box, barring a penalty, and that's where you've got to be if you want to be a top striker.”

The Town led 2-0 at the break at The Memorial Ground, and Johnson was particularly happy with how his side kicked on in the second half to add four more goals to their tally.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half and it could have been a few more, but we had to regroup at half-time because we knew the challenge the second half can bring when you’re so dominant,” said Johnson.

“The second half was about how good we can be and where we want to go as a group. You need to set the tone in these games if you want to be up there competing, and I thought we were relentless in the second half.

“It’s a squad game, because the substitutes had to come on when it had been raining all afternoon on the sideline and they were warming up and getting cold. They could have come on and froze, but they rose to the occasion and played their part.

“We’ve got to stay focused now. It was a great home win with six goals, but we’re not getting carried away with it.”
