Breaking down Gunner Stockton's three turnovers in Auburn loss

The Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers faced in a key SEC college football contest on Saturday. It was a great game for Auburn, who won 27-24 on a game-winning field goal. But for the Bulldogs, it was disappointing, as they were expected to win and had three turnovers and allowed a blocked field goal in the loss.

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has been the leader of the team, and he's relied on heavily. He went into the season as a Heisman hopeful, and that rang true with how Georgia's offense was scoring each game. But against Auburn, he had some miscues that put them in bad positions.

Stockton went 22 of 34 for 272 passing yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions with a critical fumble late in the fourth quarter. He had an early touchdown pass to tight end Lawson Luckie for 24 yards, to put them up 14 in the first quarter. He also had a late touchdown pass to wide receiver London Humphrey's that ended up tying the game at 24.

The two interceptions gave Auburn extra offensive drives, and they capitalized. The fourth-quarter comeback was solid, but Stockton had a fumble on what would have been the drive to set them up to score and win the game. Auburn got the ball back and kicked a game-winning field goal.

The loss isn't entirely on Stockton, but his turnovers are attributed heavily to it. So far this season, Stockton has 1,570 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, to four interceptions. He'll have a chance at redemption when the Bulldogs take on the Florida Gators on Saturday, October 31.

"Very unfortunate on the fumble," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on Gunner Stockton's fumble. "If there's anybody I'd pick to have the ball in their hands, it'd be him because he does a great job with his ball security.

“The one (interception) they were in two man, he stared the guy down too long. Safety made a great play off the hash. That's probably a checkdown or throw the middle read off a two man. Safety made a good play.

"And then the other one (interception) we had a boot naked out there. The guy was open. He just missed him.  He said, 'I just missed him,' and, overthrew it a little bit. And he had I think it was Ethan Barbour or somebody right there wide open. He needs to put it on his body and he threw it over him a little bit."

Stockton has usually been good at avoiding interceptions.
