Sacking Carrick solves part of a problem not even Conte and Fabregas can fix, Wilcox only a symptom

The sacking bells are ringing for Michael Carrick, and fans understand that he’s just a part of the problem, but so is Jason Wilcox.

The general consensus right now among Man Utd fans is that while Michael Carrick does deserve to be sacked, he is just a part of a much bigger problem.

From the players to the board and the owners, the rot starts at the top and goes all the way down to the bottom, ruling out a “new manager bounce” at this point.

But the actual big picture suggests that even the board is just a symptom of the problem, and that includes Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Man Utd managers are set up to fail

In the 13 years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Man Utd have tried basically every template of manager.

David Moyes was the chosen one, Louis van Gaal was the tactical genius, Jose Mourinho was the serial winner, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the former player, Erik ten Hag was the upcoming success story, and Ruben Amorim was the perfect modern hipster.

All of those managers failed not because they were inept at their job, but because Man Utd, as a club, sets their managers up for failure.

Let's hear your ideas… if Michael Carrick is sacked – Who should replace him?

Who do you want to see as Manchester United manager?

Had totally forgotten that until you mentioned haha

Bayern and Germany were a mess at the time, but that's true for United too, so yeah, makes sense. Still think he's a good manager though, a well-run could be great for him

No problem knocking off a reporter. But leaking news is not a good look. We have enough leaks already. Then again, we do not leak anymore. Players go direct to interviews instead.

Be it due to a lack of a long-term vision, backing in the transfer market, or letting player power throw the manager under the bus, the culture is rotten.

Look at the names of managers mentioned above, and it quickly becomes clear that there is no vision. Going from Van Gaal to Mourinho is basically two extreme ends of the spectrum, and going from Solskjaer’s man management to Ten Hag is the same.

The players, instead of giving their all for the man in the dugout, simply wait them out if they don’t fancy them, which is not how an elite team works.

Bring Antonio Conte, Cesc Fabregas, Kieran McKenna, Eddie Howe, or Julian Nagelsmann, and they all will suffer the same fate.

Why? Because not even Ineos are the problem, at least not the biggest one.

The Glazers start and finish the rot

The players will say there’s no ambition, the manager will say the board failed him, Wilcox will say he was given a small budget, Berrada will say Sir Jim Ratcliffe signed it off, and the reason why it’s so small is that the Glazers have sucked the club dry.

Ineos have got many decisions wrong at Old Trafford, but they actually invested some of their own money in the club, unlike Glazers, who have only taken it out.

It would be foolish to presume that Ineos wouldn’t have spent had United’s financial condition not been dire, thanks to the Glazers.

The brutal thing is that they have already pocketed billions by selling a part of the club, and will pocket multi-billion more if and when they sell it all.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that that will be the day United truly start to heal, even if Ineos completely take over the club.

United had always been strong enough to pay for themselves, but no club is ever strong enough to pay its owners in the process as well.
