Jerry Jones' confidence in Cowboys coach emerges after OT loss to Cardinals
Brian Schottenheimer has a losing record since taking charge of the Cowboys ahead of the 2025 season

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is not considering a coaching change despite a disappointing loss to the lowly Arizona Cardinals.

On Sunday, the Cowboys blew a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter to fall 33-30 to the Cardinals in overtime. The loss drops the Cowboys to 3-5, with their playoff hopes still alive only thanks to the weak NFC East, which is led by the 4-2-1 New York Giants.

Before the clash with Arizona, Dallas was 202-0-1 when leading by 14 or more in the fourth quarter at home. This loss matched the largest blown fourth-quarter lead in team history, and Jones was visibly frustrated as the nightmare unfolded.

However, Jones is not ready to cut ties with under-fire head coach Brian Schottenheimer. After Mike McCarthy departed Dallas following the 2024 season, Schottenheimer was promoted to head coach of the Cowboys, but he missed the playoffs in 2025.

“That's not in my mind at this time,” Jones said when asked about moving on from Schottenheimer, insisting that “a lot of people let Brian down today and so for whatever criticism we want to have of Brian, we can all get in line.”

“It's an indictment of the whole show,” the 84-year-old declared.

Jones has made only one in-season head coaching change since taking over the Cowboys in 1989. In 2010, the Cowboys were 1-7 when Jones replaced Wade Phillips with Jason Garrett, who remained in charge until 2019.

“I made a change, and I don't want to mention it because I'm not proud of it,” Jones said. “But I made a change with Wade Phillips there in the middle of the season, and I don't see that here.”

Dak Prescott scored a 5-yard rushing touchdown with 14:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, giving the Cowboys a 24-10 lead. With Jacoby Brissett benched, the Cardinals leaned on backup Gardner Minshew to rally the team to a stunning victory, throwing touchdowns to Tyler Allgeier, Trey McBride, and Michael Wilson to force overtime, where Chad Ryland’s field goal sealed a famous win.

The Cowboys have become the first team in the NFL this season to lose when leading by at least 14 points in the fourth; teams were 44-0-1 in such situations entering Sunday in Week 8. But Schottenheimer, who is now 10-14-1 as Cowboys coach, said he still believes in his team.

“I only know how to do it one way, and that's the work,” Schottenheimer said. “I’m a worker, I'm a problem solver. I think we got guys in there in that locker room that are problem solvers.

“We have guys in there that want to be great. We got guys that believe in what we're doing as a football team in all three phases, and they're hurting. They're hurting right now, too. And so as a leader, I'm going to stand in front and hit them with the truth.”

The Cowboys have the opportunity to bounce back against the 2-6 Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 8.
