Red Bull are thought to be considering a fundamental change for the 2027 Formula 1 season that could impact Liam Lawson.
Lawson's place on the grid next year has been a major talking point, with his F1 future up in the air.
The New Zealander is making a strong case to stay in the hot seat, having accounted for 62 of his team's 100 points so far. He's also finished in the points in 12 of the 17 races this season.
At the Singapore Grand Prix, Lawson secured P7, with an F1 insider providing an update on his career with Racing Bulls.
Racing Bulls have yet to confirm their drivers for the 2027 season, with Lawson and Arvid Lindblad yet to re-sign.
Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov has been tipped as a potential replacement following his performances in Formula 2, most likely for the Kiwi driver.
However, according to Fox Sports Australia, there are 'some murmurs' that Red Bull is considering altering its approach to Racing Bulls. There appears to be some contemplation of giving the team 'great stability' by allowing it to retain drivers for longer, which would be good news for Lawson, who in previous years would likely have been dropped at the end of the 2026 season in the interest of keeping the driver program churning.
Lawson is now backed to continue for at least another season following his form on the track, but Racing Bulls principal Alan Permane said a decision could still be some time away.
"[A decision] is going to be in the coming weeks," said Permane. "We’re in no rush. "I think everyone knows we’ve got two fantastic drivers. We’ve got a fantastic driver in F2 at the moment, and they’re all there and ready to go.
"Three doesn’t fit into two of course, and we’re just going to take a little bit more time and make sure we get the right pairing for next year.
"Top of the list [of criteria] is speed and pace and all that goes with that, but we want to bring on young talent, and of course we have one eye on them progressing in the future.
"So it’s not just about the here and now, it’s also about what they can do in the future."
Lawson has helped place Racing Bulls into the midfield battle of the Constructors' standings this season.
Despite his performances on the track, his future has been clouded by uncertainty, but Sky Sports' Ted Kravitz believes the 24-year-old has 'guaranteed his job' for next season, claiming critics are 'bonkers' if they think he will be dropped.
"Well done, Liam Lawson. What a great kid this is," he began on his Ted’s Notebook show after last weekend's Singapore Grand Prix.
"And whoever thought that he’s going to lose his place to Nikola Tsolov must be bonkers, really, because there’s no way they’re going to get rid of Liam Lawson when he’s delivering results like this.
"And maybe you could argue actually that with that P7 today, Liam has guaranteed his job for 2027 and maybe beyond."
