Many Chelsea players excelled in their 2-0 win against Everton on Saturday, including goalscorer Pedro Neto and midfield duo Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson. Xabi Alonso also had to rely on two squad players to see the Blues over the line.
Jorrel Hato and Mike Penders both played crucial roles in Chelsea’s hard-fought victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. They have given Alonso selection headaches ahead of the next match against Tottenham and for the foreseeable future.
Pep Chavarria has been in fantastic form since joining from Rayo Vallecano this summer, cementing his place at left wing-back in Xabi Alonso’s starting XI. However, Chavarria missed Chelsea’s Premier League match against Everton after sustaining a minor injury in training on Friday, with Jorrel Hato taking his place.
Many consider Hato’s best position to be on the left of a back three or as a more orthodox full-back, but he shone as an advanced wing-back on Saturday. He had a 100% dribble success rate (2/2) and made three passes into the final third. He also assisted Pedro Neto’s opener, driving into the box before crossing the ball to his Portuguese teammate.
Although Hato may not have the same engine as Chavarria, he offers more quality on the ball and physicality out of possession. When the Spaniard returns from injury, he may struggle to return to the starting XI after Hato’s remarkable performance against Everton.
Emiliano Martinez kept his first clean sheet for Chelsea in the 2-0 win over Everton, but the result was overshadowed by a nasty clash of heads with Jarrad Branthwaite that forced him off in the second half. The extent of his injury remains unclear, and Chelsea may have to manage without their goalkeeper for several games while he recovers.
Mike Penders made history by becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play for Chelsea in the Premier League at 21 years and 78 days old. He will not face many more challenging tasks than seeing out a victory away to a physical Everton team, but he rose to the challenge.
Penders made his presence felt almost immediately when he charged out to claim a floated cross and relieve the Blues of some pressure. The six-foot-seven Belgian looked reminiscent of compatriot and former Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois, with his huge frame and aerial dominance.
The best-case scenario for Chelsea is that Martinez returns to full fitness imminently and keeps his place in the starting XI for Premier League games, while Penders continues to develop in cup competitions. However, if Martinez returns with any shakiness following his injury, Penders will be pushing to start ahead of him, as the signs suggest he is ready to make a name for himself.
