Ishan Kishan leaves everyone puzzled: Confused umpire signals out as SRH batter walks off, replay shows not-out

In one of the most bizarre 10 seconds in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, Ishan Kishan registered another failure against his former team Mumbai Indians (MI) in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The match got underway with MI captain Hardik Pandya winning the toss and asking Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to bat first.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma opened the SRH batting and Head fell to Trent Boult in the second over, which brought Ishan to the crease. The left-handed batter had a blazing debut for SRH, smashing an unbeaten 106 against Rajasthan Royals, but since that knock runs had dried up for Ishan and he had scores of 0, 2, 2, 17 and 9*.

In SRH’s last match against MI at the Wankhede Stadium, Ishan fell after scoring 2 runs and the left-handed batsman was looking to come good with the bat this time around. But strange are the ways of cricket. When things are not going your way, you can fall to the tamest of deliveries. And that’s what happened in the case of Ishan, who fell to a bizarre dismissal after scoring just 1 run.

Deepak Chahar lined up for his second over with Ishan on strike and bowled a harmless delivery that was going down the leg side. Ishan tried to flick, missed, and the keeper collected the ball. No MI player appealed, Chahar just turned back to walk back to his mark looking at the umpire, who strangely had his hand halfway up to adjudge it caught-behind. Rest of the MI players also didn’t appeal but just politely enquired and then the umpire raised his finger completely.

Ishan too walked off even though there was hardly any appeal from the bowler and the keeper. And as he went off, Pandya gently tapped the helmet of his former MI teammate.

Add to that, the replays showed that there was no edge off the bat! That means that Ishan had the option of going for the review but he opted against it. The UltraEdge showed no spike as the ball went past the bat and Ishan leaving the crease without hardly any appeal from the MI fielders, heightened the drama.

After his century against RR, Ishan now has 33 runs from seven innings.
