The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell says Lisandro Martinez's second yellow card in Saturday's defeat by Chelsea was "inexplicable".
Martinez needlessly clattered into Wesley Fofana from a corner, to give away a penalty and get dismissed just seconds after hacking at Morgan Rogers to pick up his first booking.
"I feel like really he's let his team down big time," Whitwell told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.
"They were actually in the game. In the first half they were the better side and should have been ahead. It felt like a response to that Bournemouth disaster that proceeded the Como disaster.
"But for Martinez to do what he did in that moment was crazy.
"For the first goal from Rogers they parted like the red sea. There's culpability across the team but I come back to Martinez not getting closer to Maguire and shutting that gap.
"I think that played on his mind in trying to get tight to Rogers on the touchline, trying to haul him down and having a kick at him. He's a player who wears his heart on his sleeve but players get under his skin and he has reacted to get that first yellow.
"Then it's 90 seconds later when he gets a second yellow card and gives away a penalty. It is inexplicable to jump into Fofana like he did. He lost him totally and was just reckless."
