Freiburg were left frustrated after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, with Jan-Niklas Beste and Derry Scherhant believing their side could have taken something from the match. Despite taking an early lead, Freiburg conceded twice and left empty-handed.

Scherhant opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing off a well-worked counter-attack to put the visitors ahead. However, Leverkusen quickly responded through Ibrahim Maza before Patrik Schick scored the winner in the 76th minute.

Speaking after the match, Scherhant insisted Freiburg had not done enough wrong to deserve defeat, while pointing to the goals they conceded as a key factor.

"Overall, we didn't deserve to lose here today. Actually, we shouldn't be losing a game like this. We conceded the goals too easily," the Freiburg attacker said.

Scherhant also had words of praise for Maza, who scored the equaliser and provided the assist for Schick's winning goal. The pair know each other from their time together at Hertha BSC, where both developed before moving on to new challenges.

"I really wish him well. We know each other from our time together at Hertha. He could have picked a different game to play this well! But yes, I'm happy for him. He's developed really well," Scherhant added.

Beste shared his teammate's disappointment, particularly given Freiburg's overall performance. The winger was involved in the move that led to Scherhant's opener but felt defensive mistakes ultimately proved costly.

"I'm annoyed that we couldn't even take a point from this game today. We didn't defend the goals well, especially the second one. That was far too easy for the opposition," Beste said.

"We generally played a good game, which makes the result even more frustrating."

Freiburg will take encouragement from their positive spells at the BayArena, but the defeat underlined the importance of defending more decisively against top opposition. Leverkusen's ability to punish their mistakes proved decisive, leaving Freiburg with no reward despite a promising start.
