Manchester United produced a scintillating second half comeback to come from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2 in a Champions League classic on Tuesday.
The Italian side started on the front foot and smelt nerves around Old Trafford, pressing from the front and causing United to make errors.
And that is what happened as Roma pounced on a mistake from Kobbie Mainoo with Matias Soule producing the finishing touch to give the visitors an 11th-minute lead.
Soon after, United made another error at the back which led to Roma being given a huge opportunity to double their lead from the penalty spot. Donyell Malen took it with aplomb, slotting the ball into the bottom corner to put Gianpiero Gasperini's side 2-0 ahead and stun Old Trafford.
The immediate response from the Reds was not what Carrick would have wanted, though he did get one after half-time with United coming out with a point to prove.
Bruno Fernandes halved the deficit from the penalty spot at the second attempt, and that gave United some momentum to get back into the game.
After Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire missed guilt-edge chances to equalise for United, Matheus Cunha stepped up to the plate and levelled, slotting home after a mistake from Roma.
Then Cunha became the new hero at United as he scored his second and the Reds' third to put them 3-2 in front, completing the comeback with a powerful strike which flew in off the post.
Although Cunha's evening ended on a sour note with a red card for two quick-fire bookable offences, United held on for a much-needed win for Carrick.
Has faced criticism following the mistake against Bournemouth and mixed performance at Chelsea on Saturday, but Lammens wasn’t at fault for either of Roma’s two goals.
The first was an inch-perfect finish from Soule, giving him no chance. Meanwhile, Malen’s spot-kick was right in the corner and Lammens had dived the other way.
He prevented Roma from scoring a third before half-time with a smart save to stop Malen’s low driven shot, before getting up to stop Rodrigo Mora’s rasping drive.
Like Lammens, Yoro has had his fair share of criticism from fans and pundits alike, but he was United’s best defender against Roma.
Yes, that didn’t take much, but he did his job when required. He made a good early tackle to deny the visitors and stopped them scoring a third, as he sprinted back to get in position before sliding to make a clearance, just as Mora was about to shoot.
Improved as the game wore on, but made a huge mistake leading to Roma’s penalty. His clearance was scuffed and went straight to Soule before his effort struck Ayden Heaven’s hand and referee Jesus Gil Manzano pointed straight to the spot.
As he usually is, Maguire was a nuisance from set pieces in the second half and caused Roma so many issues. But the visitors defended corners and crosses well.
With Lisandro Martinez dropped after his red card against Chelsea on Saturday, Heaven was handed another massive chance to impress for Carrick.
But it’s fair to suggest he didn’t take it. There were some positive moments, but he struggled for the most part, giving the penalty away and making other errors.
Worked hard and was industrious, but got caught up high leading to Roma’s first goal. As United lost possession, Dalot was in an advanced position and allowed Soule so much room to collect the ball and pick out a spot without being challenged.
Like Maguire, he grew into the game and defended well at times. Indeed, Dalot won NINE duels throughout, more than any other United player.
Gave United good energy in midfield and was neat in possession, but his night was ended in the 51st minute after he pulled up with a hamstring injury.
The ex-Brighton man looked steady and composed in there alongside Kobbie Mainoo, and it would be a huge blow for United if he is out for the long-term.
Committed with his defensive and off-the-ball work, making tackles, winning fouls and then driving with the ball, but his passing flattered to deceive.
He gave the ball away leading to Roma’s first goal and had a passing accuracy of just 83 per cent, a statistic that must improve if he wants to take his game to the next level.
A difficult evening at the office for Amad, who was taken off in the 75th minute after having just one shot, making no key passes and two successful dribbles.
Shea Lacey grabbed an assist when he replaced Amad, and it appears he could take Amad’s place in the starting XI against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Scored United’s penalty at the second attempt and was back to his best in the second half. He was involved in absolutely everything good the Reds did, with Fernandes having four shots, making a team-high four key passes and playing seven passes into the final third.
Behind Cunha, he was United’s second best player on the pitch in that second half.
Wow. What a second half performance that was from Cunha. He was sensational and capped it off with a match-winning brace.
His first goal was a smart finish, capitalising on a huge mistake before keeping his composure and side-footing the ball into the back of the net. Then his second was another excellent strike, smashing the ball beyond the goalkeeper from a tight angle.
Only negative was his late red card.
A disappointing performance from Mbeumo, who failed to impress up front and missed one big chance in the second half. He hit both posts after being played through on goal by Cunha, and has to be more clinical if he wants to be United's main man while Benjamin Sesko is out.
That was a much-needed win for Michael Carrick, and it will ease the immediate pressure on the United boss for the time-being, though they must back it up against Villa on Sunday.
Mbeumo, Heaven, and Amad were some of the standout disappointing performances, with Carrick saved by Brazilian Cunha.
