Oliver Bearman is holding out hope that he will get a Ferrari seat in the future, but Guenther Steiner thinks he needs to give up on that dream.
The Brit is set to spend a third season with Haas in 2027. Ferrari have their line-up confirmed for next season, with Charles Leclerc signing a new contract and Hamilton reportedly having a deal until 2028.
Rumours suggested that the seven-time champion would quit after a dismal 2025 campaign, but the 2026 regulations have reinvigorated him. Currently sitting third in the standings, Hamilton’s form is ‘not ideal’ for Bearman as it keeps him waiting for a Ferrari seat.
Bearman will have to wait until 2028 for a Ferrari seat
Ralf Schumacher fears Bearman will be a ‘wasted talent’ if he stays with Haas. The Brit is currently 13th in the standings with just 23 points, with the VF-26 being incapable of scoring consistent points.
Bearman is out of contract in 2027, and he would certainly not want to hang around at Haas for a fourth season. The problem that he faces is that Hamilton and Leclerc have the Ferrari seats locked down.
For Steiner, he thinks Bearman needs to move on from Haas in 2028, and he believes that he will have the ability to decide his own future, rather than hang on to the ‘promise’ of driving for Ferrari one day.
He said via The Red Flags Podcast: “For sure, they’re inclined not to let him go because he’s a big talent. What we must think, Bearman, to his advantage, he’s still very young, so even if he stays at Haas next year…
“I think in ’28, he needs to move on. He needs to get somewhere just to to raise his level. But it’s difficult, as you say, because Lewis, I don’t think he’s going to quit the end of next year, why would he?
“He’s doing good, he didn’t quit last year, survival this year. Fernando, how long is he going to drive?
“I think now he’s got also enough confidence in himself and in his abilities that he says, ‘OK, I’d rather be my own agent than being a Ferrari driver, and I look after my own future’, than living a promise of one day you will be in a Ferrari, because he has got the talent.”
Bearman’s chances of joining Ferrari all depend on Hamilton and whether he decides to call time on his career at the end of 2027. But even if he does retire, his fellow Brit may not be next in line for the seat.
Rafael Camara could usurp Bearman as the heir to Hamilton’s seat if he beats him at Haas in 2027. The Brazilian, who is also backed by Ferrari, is set to join the American team next season in place of Esteban Ocon.
