Celtic ranked, rated and slated as key trio flop but Osmand arrives

Benfica ran out 4–1 winners and further underlined the major flaws in a side which appears incapable of truly competing in season-defining encounters.

The hosts were 3-0 up and cruising at the interval, but the Premiership champions came to life in the second half as Camilo Duran scored.

Marco Silva's men made Celtic their play thing, at times, but Martin O'Neill will be buoyed by the efforts after the interval.

Celtic hit the woodwork three times, but it would be remiss to underplay how dominant Benfica were any time they turned the dial up.

And they did so again in the final moments as Vangelis Pavlidis added to Jhon Duran's brace and Alexander Bah's strike.

With that being said, here is how every player performed in the Portuguese capital from best to worst...

Camilo Duran – 7

After a quiet start, the Colombian was desperately unlucky with a strike, which struck the woodwork after Hogh’s original effort. Looked to get forward and was an out-ball for the visitors, on what was a tough evening for the ex-Qarabag man and his side. Despite this, he profited from Hassan, who picked out the striker with a lovely cross, as Duran made no mistake with his header, before hitting the post later on in the half.

Callum Osmand – 6

On for Hogh after a disappointing showing from the Dane, Osmand was unlucky not to score in the early stages, putting his first shot over the bar from close range. Deployed out wide, he used his pace and direct style to get at Benfica, as he proved to be a thorn in the side for the home team. A positive first showing since returning from his latest injury.

Haissem Hassan – 6

A bright showing from the Egyptian, who seemed to have the beating of his marker on the wing. Though his delivery and end product have been hit or miss since arriving this summer, he picked out Duran in the box with a great cross, which the forward made no mistake with via a header.

Mika Baur – 6

A positive start to the game, with the German midfielder playing through Kasper Hogh before working the home goalkeeper with a stinging shot. After this encouraging opening, however, the summer signing’s impact waned, as Benfica’s grip on proceedings tightened. After a quiet second half showing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced the ex-Paderborn man in the 57th minute.

Kieran Tierney – 6

A tough assignment, though the Scotland international tried his best to stick to the task at hand. Unleashed a strong shot which stung the hands of Anatoliy Trubin near the end of the half, though the Ukrainian stopper dealt with it well. Lasted the duration – a welcome boost amid his ability to finish games.

Colby Donovan – 5

Gianluca Prestianni proved a tough test for the young full-back to contain, with the Argentinian forward keen to attack at every opportunity. Though he stuck to his task with endeavour and drive, the highly rated wide man was having his way with his marker. A good effort, but a tough night for the youngster at right-back.

Auston Trusty – 5

Restored to the starting line-up in place of Liam Scales, the American was the better of the two centre-backs, though he was beaten far too easily for Duran’s second and Benfica’s third. Kept to his task, though not much joy was to be had by the American on his trip to Portugal.

Callum McGregor – 5

A player whose influence in Celtic’s midfield is waning, the captain was largely anonymous throughout proceedings in the Portuguese capital. Once the man for the big occasions, the skipper now looks compromised in the middle of the park, with no protection from both his defenders and those in front of him.

Viljami Sinisalo – 5

His first slice of action was to pick the ball out of his own net, following Jhon Duran’s Panenka spot-kick. Had to do better with the second, which he got a touch on, while the third was a good finish by Duran. Made two good saves in the second half from Prestianni, as he was called into action by the 20-year-old, though he was rooted to the spot for Vangelis Pavlidis’ late strike.

Dane Murray – 5

Could not have asked for a worse start, with his attempted clearance leading to Duran’s leg being kicked by the young defender in the box. To compound the academy graduate’s misery, the Colombian made no mistake, converting his subsequent penalty. He did stabilise as the game went on, but the damage was done, in part due to his early penalty concession.

Sebastian Tounekti – 4

A polarising figure, the Tunisian lost Alexander Bah in the lead-up to Benfica’s second, before running in the opposite direction instead of trying to atone for his error. Put in a good ball shortly after, but his overall impact was lacking on both ends of the pitch. Replaced by Haissem Hassan at the break.

Kasper Hogh – 4

Forced the keeper into an early stop after the home side’s opener, which was well saved by the Benfica man’s foot. The Dane then clipped the post from close range, an effort which he should have done better with. Signed with a reputation on the European stage, these are chances which the £11m man must put away for his new side. Hooked at half-time for Callum Osmand – another night to forget for the record signing.

Oliver Sorensen – 4

Pre-match, Martin O’Neill spoke about the need for “running power” in midfield, though that was nowhere to be seen from the Parma loanee at Estadio da Luz. Much like McGregor, his efforts in the opening half were lacking, as the home side had their way with the visitors to Lisbon. Not entirely sure what he brings to Celtic’s midfield, particularly in a positive sense. Anonymous for the duration, he was replaced by Benjamin Nygren in the second half.
