Victor Wembanyama had a very poor game by his standards against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and fans aren’t being kind to the French superstar about it.
Victor Wembanyama had an incredible season in 2025-26. The San Antonio Spurs star truly arrived, becoming the first player in history to unanimously win Defensive Player of the Year. He also finished third in MVP voting and led the Spurs all the way to the NBA Finals.
Big things are expected from him this season, but expectations usually come with intense scrutiny. So when Wemby failed to deliver in the first game of the season against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night, some ridicule on social media was to be expected.
Wembanyama was himself on defence, he had six blocks on the night. t did not help the Spurs get the win; of course, they lost 116-104, but at least he is beyond reproach on that end of the floor. The real problems he faced were on offence.
Wemby put up just 12 points in the game, taking just 13 shots. Not only did he take what many would consider very few shots for a superstar in a loss, but he made just one. early a third of his attempts were three-pointers too, none of which he made. Unsurprisingly, fans didn’t like what they saw.

“If I shot January 13 against “the Big Oxtail” I’d quit basketball,” one fan hilariously said. “How can you be as big as Wemby is and not make more than one field goal? Stop taking jumpers smh,” another fan wrote. “The Knicks broke him,” a third fan simply said.
“This is a damning performance bruh, like no top 5 player should play this bad,” a fourth fan wrote. “His only make was an alley-oop as time expired in the third quarter. Make it make sense,” a fifth fan added. “That Western Conference playoff run is over, time to prove he’s got it once more,” wrote a sixth fan.

The regular season has 82 games, and one bad performance is not an indication of anything. But this is a good way for Wemby to learn that achieving early success at the NBA level means the pressure goes up even when it comes to games that seemingly shouldn’t matter as much.
