Andoni Iraola must be kicking himself this Sunday after the decision to start Dominik Szoboszlai against Brentford completely backfired.

Iraola confirmed that Szoboszlai will miss ‘some time‘ after Liverpool beat the Bees on Saturday, with the Hungarian only able to last 30 minutes upon his return to the side.

A hamstring problem had kept him out of the Reds’ previous two matches, and according to Liverpool legend Steve Nicol, Szoboszlai is likely to miss more than two weeks as he recovers from his latest setback.

Szoboszlai set to miss more than two weeks

Such is the nature of the current Liverpool fixture schedule, missing two weeks would amount to Szoboszlai missing the next four games.

But, as Nicol claimed on ESPN, the 25-year-old will probably miss even more than that, potentially putting him out of action until the November international break.

“Szoboszlai’s a big problem,” said the pundit. “The Frimpong one not that much. But definitely Szoboszlai, a guy who can change the game basically, and a guy who, so far this season, has been one of Liverpool’s best players.

“To lose him, because it’s a hamstring, back in my day it was at least two weeks, but the fact that he already has missed time, and it’s a recurrence of the same injury, means it’s going to be more than two weeks. So, yeah, that’s a problem.”

Liverpool now have four games on the bounce, all of which Szoboszlai looks likely to miss. They play Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday before facing Brighton at Anfield on Sunday.

Two big games then follow – against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and Arsenal in the Premier League. With Liverpool already a little short in midfield, Iraola is going to have to manage his options very carefully.

A visit to Fenerbahce on November 4th and a trip to Selhurst Park four days later round out Liverpool’s pre-international break schedule, and on Nicol’s prediction, fans should not expect Szoboszlai to feature in any of those six games.
