Angel Reese makes more WNBA history and it's (past) time for her to get her flowers

It's time to have a conversation about 2026 Angel Reese. The 2025 version of Reese was impressive, but what we're witnessing is different in several ways. Basketball fans have had their fun with the "mebounds" jokes and memes. Reese even got on board with it and ultimately turned it into a six-figure business after trademarking the term.

However, Reese's off-court moves aren't the focal point of this discussion. It's the production we've seen consistently from the Atlanta Dream star, especially throughout the 2026 WNBA season. In the Dream's 80-69 win over the Golden State Valkyries to set up a Game 7 in the 2026 WNBA Finals, Reese added another record to her resume. She surpassed Sylvia Fowles for most rebounds in a WNBA Finals series with 78 and counting, a mark that Fowles has held since 2017.

And to be clear, as impressive as that is, her record-breaking performance on the glass isn't at the heart of this Reese discussion, either.

Instead, it's time to talk about a player who's making an impact in multiple ways on both ends of the floor, whether the ball is going in the hoop or not. Simply put, Reese has cemented herself as a force in the WNBA, so either hop on the bandwagon or let it fly right by.

Angel Reese's significant step forward in 2026 WNBA season

Reese's dominant rebounding is an impressive part of her game, but it's far from the only part worth praising. The statistical sample size goes back to the early stages of the 2026 WNBA season, but to keep it simple, look at the 24-year-old's playoff performance.

Over 11 postseason games this year, Reese has shot 45.5% or better from the field in six games and 50% or better in five. She's extended her range and has knocked down 38.5% of her three-point attempts, even factoring in an off-game where she shot 2-of-8. But the games where her shot isn't falling are actually the instances that stand out most when you look at her impact.

Reese averaged 1.9 assists per game as a rookie, 3.7 in 2025 and 2.8 during her first regular season with the Dream. But in Atlanta's two most important games of the year, Game 5 and 6 against the Valkyries, she dished out 11 assists, including six in the Game 6 victory. Reese did this when her shot wasn't falling, or her teammates had better opportunities to score, and her ability to playmake for others is another layer of consistent improvement we've seen throughout her young career. She's also posted at least three assists in each WNBA Finals matchup since Game 2.

Reese has averaged 15.8 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists, with over one block and one steal per game in the WNBA Finals. Her all-around play has been pivotal against the league's best defensive team and has helped create easier scoring opportunities for her teammates. She's shown this throughout the regular season, too.

The former LSU star's game continues to evolve and improve, and the leap we've seen in year No. 3 is the biggest yet. One thing is now indisputable: Reese isn't just one of the best inside players in the WNBA; she's becoming one of the league's most impactful players.

As For The Win's Prince J. Grimes put it, Reese has "ice in her veins," and that's been true for most of 2026.
