'He's not as ready as he would want to be' – Dinesh Karthik's blunt take on Bhuvneshwar Kumar after dismal outing in 1st T20I

Dinesh Karthik analysed Bhuvneshwar Kumar's performance in India's opening T20I against New Zealand at Christchurch on October 22, 2026.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to India's playing eleven for the 1st T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22, 2026. This marked his comeback to international cricket after a gap of nearly four years, following his appearance in the 5th T20I against West Indies in Bengaluru the previous week. Captain Shreyas Iyer had backed Bhuvneshwar before the match, noting that he has won the IPL in each of the last two years and possesses a very good idea of how to dominate this format.

Bhuvneshwar's performance in the opening match proved challenging. He bowled 4 overs and conceded 49 runs without taking a wicket, also delivering two wides and two no-balls during his spell. His opening over went for just four runs, but the middle overs of his spell proved costly. The no-balls were particularly notable given Bhuvneshwar's track record as a disciplined bowler in the powerplay and death overs.

Karthik's analysis focused on the no-balls that disrupted Bhuvneshwar's spell and the contrast between his opening and closing overs. The former India wicketkeeper-batter recognised that returning to international cricket after such a long absence naturally carries challenges, particularly in managing the pressure of a competitive T20I environment.

"It was the no-balls that did him in. He's not somebody who generally bowls no-balls. I am not sure why, but it may have been a bit of nerves. Two no-balls in a game is unheard of for him," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

"So I would put it down to the fact that he's not as ready as he would want to be. But if we look closely, his first and last overs were very good. However, the second and third overs had no-balls in it and that reflects in his analysis, as those were huge overs," he added.

Karthik's assessment of nerves affecting performance

Karthik acknowledged that Bhuvneshwar's technical execution needed to improve if he was to regain his position as a reliable death bowler for India. He balanced empathy for the comeback challenge with a realistic assessment of what the performance revealed about the bowler's current match fitness and rhythm.

"A lot of fans may be critical, but it's his first day back in international cricket. So cut him some slack. But he has to be aware that no-balls are not a habit he wants to develop. He knows he's better than that. But was he as good as he could be? Definitely not," he added.

As India progress through the T20I series against New Zealand, Bhuvneshwar would have opportunities to rebuild confidence and demonstrate the consistency that had made him a key player in India's limited-overs setup. His ability to control his line in the middle overs and eliminate unforced errors would be critical to his success in the coming matches.
