India National Cricket Team batting superstar Virat Kohli has added another milestone to his already celebrated ODI career during the second ODI against the New Zealand National Cricket Team on Saturday (November 7) at Hnry Stadium in Wellington.

The Indian batting superstar has now broken the former Australia captain Ricky Ponting to become the batter with the most ODI runs against New Zealand.

Virat Kohli makes history in Wellington

Virat Kohli needed just one run to break Ricky Ponting's record of scoring the most runs against New Zealand in the ODI cricket. The former Indian captain opened his account with a beautiful boundary on the second ball of his innings in the second ODI against New Zealand to break Ponting’s record.

With that shot, Kohli became the player with the most runs against New Zealand in the ODI cricket, surpassing Ponting’s tally of 1971 ODI runs against the Black Caps. Former India legend Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list with 1750 runs, followed by Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara (1568).

Players with the most ODI runs against New Zealand:

  1. Virat Kohli – 1,975 runs
  2. Ricky Ponting – 1,971 runs
  3. Sachin Tendulkar – 1,750 runs
  4. Kumar Sangakkara – 1,568 runs
  5. Sanath Jayasuriya – 1,519 runs
  6. Jacques Kallis – 1,449 runs

Jacob Duffy's clever bowling exposes Virat Kohli's weakness outside off stump

Although Virat Kohli achieved the big milestone, he failed badly with the bat after a great start to the tour in Auckland, as India was chasing 135 runs to win the second ODI against New Zealand in Wellington. The former Indian captain was dismissed for just seven runs off seven balls.

New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy managed to get rid of Kohli after luring him to play a drive outside the off stump. The ball did not come onto the bat as expected, and the dashing right-hander played his shot early. He ended up chipping the ball straight to Will Young at cover point.

Young didn’t make a mistake in sending Kohli back to the pavilion cheaply. New Zealand had clearly planned to bowl wide outside off stump, knowing Kohli could be troubled by that line when the ball was moving. Their plan worked perfectly as Duffy removed the in-form Indian batting icon.

Gurnoor Brar stars as New Zealand collapse for 134

Earlier, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and decided to bowl first against the hosts in Wellington. And then the Indian bowlers produced a brilliant performance as Gurnoor Brar picked up four wickets for 30 runs to bowl out New Zealand for just 134.

India entered the match hoping to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series in New Zealand. They had already won the rain-hit first ODI by five wickets, with Virat Kohli scoring 74 runs. New Zealand was without their key batter, Devon Conway, who was ruled out of the series after suffering a concussion in a training-ground collision.
