Nashville out to ‘set the standard’ for MLS after equalling Miami’s points record

Nashville SC captain Hany Mukhtar said he and his team-mates want to set a new standard for MLS, after they tied the competition's all-time regular-season points record on Sunday.

The Supporters' Shield winners – who lifted that trophy after their final home game of the regular season – had to fight back from 2-0 down to beat the New York Red Bulls 3-2.

Goals from Julian Hall and Rafael Mosquera put the Red Bulls 2-0 up and threatened to spoil a party atmosphere in Tennessee, even after Cade Cowell missed an early penalty for the visitors.

However, an own goal from Tim Parker got Nashville back within one on the stroke of half-time, and after fellow defender Julian Bazan also put through his own net in the 78th minute, Sam Surridge hit a stoppage-time winner.

That took the hosts to 74 points from 33 games this year, tying the record set by Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami team-mates in 2024.

And, with one more game to go, away to FC Cincinnati on Saturday, B.J. Callaghan's team have a chance to make history outright, which is exactly what they intend to do.

"It's amazing," Mukhtar said after Sunday's match. "But now we are tied with Miami on the same points, and we have one more game.

"We want to be the standard of this league. This is something very unique, and you don't often have the chance to become the standard of a whole league.

"This group has shown that we can win away, and that will be our mentality in Cincinnati."

Callaghan was most impressed by the way his team responded to going two goals down, also lauding their fans for sticking with them during a tough first half.

"All year we've talked about being able to respond. Anything that gets thrown at us – we think we've scored, VAR or whatever – it doesn't matter," he said.

"We move onto the next play and we continue to hunt goals, and that was what we needed in this game. You've got to give all the guys credit. They just left everything out there.

"You obviously have to give the fans tremendous credit. It goes 2-0, and they're still behind us. It's 2-1, and we're still feeling the positive energy going into the locker room.

"That's what you really hope for when you have a true connection with the club and the city and the fans."

Elsewhere on Sunday, the team with the second-best regular-season record – the Western Conference-winning Vancouver Whitecaps – sent out a statement of their playoff ambitions with a 5-1 rout of the Seattle Sounders.

Brian White helped himself to a brace and was joined on the scoresheet by Ryan Gauld, Mathias Laborda and Aleksa Cvetkovic, with Thomas Muller not even required to come off the bench in Vancouver's dominant win.

The result saw the Caps become only the fourth team in MLS history to manage back-to-back seasons with 60+ points, while they also set new club records for most home wins (11) and points (35) in a single calendar year.

A huge 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo propelled the Portland Timbers into a wild-card position ahead of the final matchday, while Minnesota United kept their own hopes alive by winning by the same scoreline at Los Angeles FC.

The seventh-placed LA Galaxy and 12th-placed Minnesota are now separated by just three points, with six teams contending for one automatic playoff place and the two wild-card spots.
