Celtic Humiliated Across Europe as Foreign Media Deliver a Brutal Verdict Desmond Cannot Ignore
Celtic Humiliated Across Europe as Foreign Media Deliver a Brutal Verdict Desmond Cannot Ignore

Portuguese and European newspapers deliver a devastating assessment of Celtic’s collapse in Lisbon, raising serious questions about the club’s ambition.

Celtic’s European humiliation in Lisbon has now travelled far beyond Scotland, and the verdict from the international media makes deeply uncomfortable reading.

Benfica’s 4-1 victory was emphatic enough. However, the language used by journalists across Europe to describe Celtic’s performance tells an even more disturbing story.

Weak. Predictable. Overwhelmed.

These are not descriptions that should ever become synonymous with a club of Celtic’s stature.

Portuguese Media Show Celtic No Mercy

Portuguese newspaper A Bola offered a particularly savage assessment, comparing Benfica’s attacking football to a relentless river breaking through Celtic’s fragile defensive resistance.

Its verdict was devastating: Celtic were weak in attack and defence, with the Scottish champions effectively waiting for half-time to escape the pressure.

Meanwhile, Record suggested Benfica’s imperial eagle had barely been troubled by Celtic’s resistance.

Think about that for a moment.

A club with Celtic’s history, resources and extraordinary support being portrayed internationally as little more than an inconvenience.

Celtic’s European Decline Is Becoming Embarrassing

French publication L’Équipe concentrated on Jhon Durán’s outstanding contribution, while Danish outlet Bold highlighted the ease with which Benfica secured their victory.

Across Europe, the common theme was unmistakable.

Celtic simply could not compete.

And that is where the uncomfortable questions must begin.

Nobody seriously expects Celtic to defeat Europe’s strongest clubs every time they take the field. But surely supporters are entitled to expect organisation, resilience and a credible competitive performance?

Instead, Celtic were three goals behind before half-time.

Dermot Desmond Cannot Escape Responsibility

Martin O’Neill must answer questions about his selections and tactical approach. However, the problems extend considerably further than one manager or one dreadful European evening.

For years, Celtic have enjoyed considerable domestic financial advantages, substantial European income and the backing of one of football’s most loyal supports.

Yet where is the corresponding European progress?

Dermot Desmond and his fellow directors cannot continually present Celtic as an ambitious European institution while supporters witness performances that suggest an alarming gulf between aspiration and reality.

Celtic Deserve Better Than European Ridicule

The most painful aspect of Lisbon was not simply the scoreline.

It was the apparent acceptance, reflected in much of the coverage, that Benfica’s superiority was inevitable.

That should alarm everyone responsible for Celtic’s direction.

European credibility is built through intelligent recruitment, coherent planning and genuine ambition.

Celtic supporters have provided their commitment.

The question now is whether those running their club possess the ambition to match it.

Because when European newspapers begin treating Celtic’s weakness as predictable, the embarrassment belongs to considerably more people than the eleven players on the pitch.
