Carsten Tilke is responsible for designing the new Formula 1 circuit in Rwanda and he has shared more details about their design philosophy.
It was confirmed that Formula 1 will host an African Grand Prix in Rwanda in the early 2030s with a new circuit being constructed in Bugesera.
While F1 fans preferred South Africa as a hosting location, there is some exciting news about the new circuit that could build anticipation.
Alex Wurz and Carsten Tilke are the track designers for the new circuit, and they have spoken about their philosophy to Naomi Schiff.
Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, Tilke said: “It’s challenging, it’s fun, but it’s also good for overtaking I think. This is important.
“It should not just be a qualifying lap track. It’s a track which is cool for racing and produces cool racing, because we have [multiple] overtaking spots.
“We have different strategies to allow for many position changes. That’s our goal.”
Tilke confirmed the track is being built with overtaking in mind. He also confirmed that other categories could be welcomed to the circuit outside of just Formula 1.
Formula 1 headed to the Madring for the first time in 2026 but the resulting race was extremely disappointing.
According to FormulaDream, there were only nine on-track overtakes at the Madrid Grand Prix, which created a very underwhelming race.
It was the fewest number of overtakes at a track outside of Monaco, and immediately, any excitement around the Madring has faded.
If the African Grand Prix is going to be a hit with fans, overtaking is essential but, so far, the news around the track is promising.
