Michael Carrick argues with Matheus Cunha during Como defeat

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was involved in a heated exchange with Matheus Cunha during Wednesday evening’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.

The Red Devils endured another disastrous European outing, with frustration visibly growing as Carrick’s side struggled to establish themselves against the Italian opposition.

According to Manchester United journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Carrick exchanged words with Cunha during a stoppage in play.

Luckhurst reported on X: “Carrick just had a relatively robust exchange of views with Cunha during the stoppage before he cursed at #mufc losing possession again.”

The incident highlights the growing frustration surrounding United, whose latest defeat has intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s position.

United have now gone seven consecutive matches without a victory, with their performances continuing to raise serious concerns.

However, the precise words exchanged between Carrick and Cunha remain unknown, and there is no indication that the disagreement continued beyond the touchline incident.

Pressure intensifies on Michael Carrick after Como humiliation

The confrontation comes at a particularly difficult moment for Michael Carrick, whose Manchester United side have now gone seven consecutive matches without a victory.

United entered Wednesday’s Champions League encounter desperate to end their miserable run, having already suffered a 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

However, the 4-1 loss against Como has only intensified questions about Carrick’s ability to turn the season around.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United had already exposed problems with United’s defensive organisation and their inability to protect a lead.

The manager has also been forced to contend with several absences, with injuries disrupting his squad throughout October.

Nevertheless, the latest defeat will raise further questions about United’s performances, particularly their inability to retain possession and maintain control during matches.

Cunha, who joined United from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2025, was among the players involved in the frustrating evening.

The Brazilian, who inherited the club’s famous number 10 shirt following his arrival, was substituted for Amad Diallo at half-time today.

United’s attacking options have also been affected by Benjamin Sesko’s ongoing fitness problems, with the striker now facing the prospect of an extended absence.

Despite the exchange between Carrick and Cunha, there is currently no evidence of a wider disagreement between the pair.

However, with results continuing to deteriorate, the United manager faces increasing pressure to restore confidence before Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth.
