Weymouth maintain unbeaten run with win over Barnstaple

Holmes 3 (pen), Jackson 15, Swann 69

WEYMOUTH maintained their unbeaten Southern League Division One South run with an impressive 3-0 victory over Barnstaple in north Devon.

Toby Holmes and Sam Jackson struck inside the opening 15 minutes to put the Terras firmly in control before Tor Swann completed the scoring during the second half.

The Terras have now won 10 league and cup games away from home for the first time since 1998

Jamie Wells was forced into two changes from the midweek win over Westbury United as Tom Bearwish and Brooklyn Genesini missed out through injury.

Oakley Hanger and Lewis Brown were brought in to replace them.

Weymouth could hardly have asked for a better start, taking the lead after just three minutes through Holmes.

The Terras frontman netted his 12th goal of the campaign as he fired home from the spot after the visitors were awarded an early penalty.

They continued to dominate the early exchanges and their pressure was rewarded again in the 15th minute.

A corner was delivered into the Barnstaple penalty area and Jackson rose to meet it, heading home to double Weymouth's advantage.

The Terras were threatening to put the contest beyond their hosts inside the opening 20 minutes.

Mitch Beardmore sent a ball across towards Holmes in the 19th minute, but the striker was unable to add his second as his effort went narrowly wide.

Weymouth continued to create opportunities as the first half progressed, with Brown the next to go close.

The midfielder looked to have a chance of adding a third in the 35th minute, only for the James Hamon to produce a fine save to keep the deficit at two.

The hosts managed to prevent Weymouth from extending their advantage before the interval, leaving the Terras 2-0 ahead at half-time following an accomplished opening 45 minutes.

Weymouth found the third goal their performance had threatened in the 69th minute to seal the points.

Barnstaple goalkeeper Hamon managed to palm the initial effort away, but the loose ball fell invitingly for Swann, who made no mistake as he smashed it home to make it 3-0.

There was no way back for Barnstaple from there as Weymouth comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest to secure another victory and preserve their unbeaten run.

The Terras remain two points behind league leaders Dorchester Town in second place.

Wells' side now face a quick turnaround as they prepare to return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Bristol Manor Farm.
