The dedication of women’s footballers in the isles has been hailed after a historic run in the Scottish Cup came to an end.
Shetland Girls and Women’s FC were eventually knocked out of the competition by Championship league leaders Rossvale WFC last week.
Shetland were defeated 4-0 while keeper Jessica Laurenson was named the blues’ player of the match.
In a statement, Rossvale said the Shetland women showed a “remarkable attitude” to the game.
“The result is really secondary and whilst we are proud in our support of the development of girls’ and women’s football in our community, the Shetlanders showed fantastic attitude, and it proved to be a very special occassion,” Rossvale said.
“This is an inspiring story that women and girls want to play the sport no matter the hurdles.”
Supporters throughout the isles have been full of praise for the Shetland side.
The girls have been nominated for The Shetland Sports Awards as Team of the Year, with a ceremony to be held on Friday, 13th November at the Clickimin Leisure Centre.
During their run in the cup the lasses played Stewarton Annick, Aberdeen West End and Musselburgh Windsor.
This remarkable run marks the first time a Shetland team has reached the Scottish Cup proper, after overcoming two preliminary rounds.
