The Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to maintain defensive consistency through the first seven games, but veteran linebacker Zack Baun remains one of the most important players in Vic Fangio's system. Philadelphia enters Week 8 with a 2-5 record and five straight losses, a disappointing stretch that has exposed problems with run defense, tackling, and generating pressure.
Baun has been a dependable presence in the middle of that defense, bringing versatility and experience to a unit navigating personnel changes and injuries. The veteran linebacker has been one of Philadelphia's most valuable defenders since joining the franchise in 2024, developing into a central figure in Fangio's scheme after beginning his career with New Orleans.
His ability to stop the run, cover underneath routes, and handle assignments near the line of scrimmage gives Philadelphia flexibility against different offensive formations. Pro Football Focus assigned Baun a 79.5 overall defensive grade (5th in the NFL) and a 73.1 coverage grade. Both ranked among the NFL's better linebacker performances at that point in the season. NFL and PFF stats. According to Eagles Communications, Baun leads all NFL linebackers with 5 forced incompletions and 7 tackles for loss or no gain, per Pro Football Focus.
Baun's responsibilities have grown as Philadelphia's defense has struggled to consistently control opponents on early downs. The Eagles allowed Dallas to rush for 204 yards Monday night, including 155 from Javonte Williams. The Cowboys repeatedly created favorable down-and-distance situations, limiting Philadelphia's ability to utilize its pass rush in obvious passing situations. Those problems place additional pressure on Baun and fellow linebacker Jihaad Campbell to maintain gap discipline, recognize blocking schemes, and prevent opposing running backs from reaching the second level.
Baun's versatility will also be important against Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Daniels can extend passing plays and create rushing opportunities when defenses lose containment. Philadelphia's linebackers must remain disciplined while accounting for the Commanders' running backs and underneath receiving options. The Eagles have invested considerable resources in their defensive front and secondary, but their success often depends on communication and execution from players in the middle of the field.
Baun cannot solve every problem facing Philadelphia's defense. However, his continued production provides a foundation for a unit trying to reverse a disappointing start.
As the Eagles approach the midpoint of the season, more consistent performances from the players around Baun will be essential if Philadelphia hopes to regain its defensive identity.
