Bills' James Cook has best receiving game of 2026 vs. Raiders

James Cook came into Week 6 with the Bills already leaning on him as the most productive weapon on their offense. Sunday added a phase the first five weeks had not.

The Buffalo RB1 ran for 95 yards with a 4.3 average and a fourth-quarter touchdown against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, and stepped into his role in the passing game, adding 58 yards receiving.

Cook was 3-for-3 when targeted, including a 26-yard catch late in the fourth quarter. It was the biggest receiving game of his 2026 season by a wide margin, 46 yards better than his next-best output, the 12 yards he managed in Week 1.

He turned a third-and-3 into a first down with the 26-yard catch, then carried it three yards into the end zone on the next snap to put Buffalo ahead for good with 4:43 left.

That sequence came a week after two fumbles against the Rams, one of them in overtime, put a damper on another strong start from the NFL's 2025 rushing champ. Cook finished last season with 1,621 yards.

His head coach Joe Brady issued a warning but never wavered.

"They asked me in the production meeting last night, 'What are you going to do with James Cook?' And I was like, 'I'm going to hand him the football,'" Brady said. "I didn't get to standing right here without James, and it's the confidence I have in him and not making it anything bigger than it needs to be and trust that he's going to correct it and clean it up. He was outstanding [on Sunday]."

That confidence is why he kept putting the ball in Cook's hands, even after his two fumbles in Los Angeles.

"... It's the confidence that I have in him," the head coach and offensive playcaller added. "The trust that I have in him, the trust that the team has in him, that no one makes it bigger, and he knows when he holds that football that he holds the whole organization. I love that guy, and I loved to see him respond today."

Cook finished with 153 total yards from scrimmage and the protected the football. The timing was significant in that Josh Allen made it a point to publicly state that he needs to take more check downs and open targets.

For Cook's part, he was drafted to be a versatile, dual threat weapon in the air and on the ground. He'd been taking the majority share of snaps and carries as a workhorse in the run game, but had been mostly a non factor in the passing game. As if on cue, that all changed Sunday. Whether it continues, remains to be seen.

Through six games he has 627 rushing yards and six touchdowns, and is third in the NFL behind Kenneth Walker III and Bijan Robinson in ground yards.
