After a loss to division rivals Dallas Cowboys on Monday, calls are mounting for head coach Nick Sirianni’s dismissal. The 38-21 defeat marked the Eagles’ fifth straight loss of the season, the longest losing streak of the Sirianni era.
Although Sirianni has built an impressive résumé in Philadelphia, sentiment among fans and NFL analysts appears to be shifting as the losses mount. The Eagles have also dealt with significant injuries on offense, most notably to Jalen Hurts, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season while undergoing treatment for blood clots.
Even with that context, analyst Nick Wright believes Sirianni’s job could be in jeopardy and has already named who he thinks should replace him.
Few expected the Eagles’ season to unravel this quickly. After Jalen Hurts was sidelined, Philadelphia turned to 26-year-old Tanner McKee, but the offense has struggled to generate consistent production amid a wave of injuries and major personnel changes.
As the losing streak has continued, scrutiny has increasingly shifted toward Sirianni and his ability to steady the team.
That uncertainty has opened the door to broader questions about whether Philadelphia could eventually make a coaching change. Wright is among those who believe the Eagles may already need to start thinking beyond this season rather than waiting to see whether Sirianni can reverse the slide.
“I think you do hold a fire sale, and I think you start getting your search committee ready for a head coach. I think that’s what they’re going to do,” Wright said on “First Things First.”
“I think Shane Steichen will be the next head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles,” he added. “I said it a week ago. I’ll say it again. I don’t think Sirianni is going to survive this type of season… Had he built up enough equity, you would hope, you would think he could have survived a lot of bad seasons, particularly one where the quarterback is knocked out for the year.”
Steichen is currently the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and previously served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator from 2021 to 2022, where he played a key role in Philadelphia’s run to Super Bowl LVII.
However, his own future in Indianapolis has become increasingly uncertain. The Colts already fired longtime general manager Chris Ballard after a 2-4 start, and Steichen’s job could be next if he is unable to turn the season around. That uncertainty has only fueled speculation about a potential return to Philadelphia if the Eagles eventually move on from Sirianni.
Despite hiring a new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion, this year, Sirianni has struggled to get the offense back on track and keep the team winning. Through Week 7, the Eagles rank 30th on PFN’s Offense Impact Metric with a 65.3 grade.
Across his first five seasons in Philadelphia, Sirianni led the Eagles to five consecutive playoff appearances, two NFC championships, and a victory in Super Bowl LIX.
It remains to be seen whether one losing season would be enough to cost him his job, but the situation in Philadelphia is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
Next up, the Eagles will face the Washington Commanders in their Week 8 matchup. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Northwest Stadium.
