Truro City FA Cup dreams end with narrow defeat at Sutton United

Truro City bowed out of the FA Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Sutton United in the fourth qualifying round.

A first-half goal by Emmanuel Osadebe sealed the Tinners’ fate and, in the process, scuppered their chances of reaching the first round proper of the competition.

The home side enjoyed large amounts of possession in the opening stages without testing Aiden Stone in goal.

The deadlock was then broken just after the half-hour mark when Osadebe scored with a long-range strike. The ball took a nick off the post on its way through, beating Stone.

Truro could have had an instant response as a Cristian Oxlade-Chamberlain long throw caused panic in the box. It was diverted towards goal but did not find its way in.

Into the second half, the momentum was very much in the away side’s favour, getting into plenty of good positions without making any count.

Zac Bell nearly got the equaliser when he met a cross from the left, but it was saved brilliantly by Spike Brits.

Many more openings came and went, but the Tinners couldn’t find that elusive equaliser that would have sent the tie back to Cornwall for a replay, it just wasn’t meant to be on the day.

It is disappointing from a Tinners’ standpoint that they didn’t make the first round proper of the competition, which would have been only the second time they had achieved that feat. However, facing a team in the league above them was always going to be a big task, and it was a valiant effort.

Manager John Askey reflected on the cup run, saying he believes reaching the first round should be a minimum requirement for the club in its current trajectory:

“I think the football club has moved on from the past. We should expect, if it’s not this year then next year, if the draws are kind, then we should be getting into the first round. It’s not enough to get to this round (qualifying). We have got to get to a situation where you are getting into the first round regularly.”

Despite the loss, the focus now switches back to the league and the National League Cup. With Truro going well in both, they will hope to maintain the momentum and continue to enjoy positive campaigns in those competitions.

Next up is another away match against Hampton & Richmond Borough in the National League South.
