Moretto criticises Amorim and warns Milan over ‘debatable’ handling of Camarda and Comotto

AC Milan are at risk of losing some of their young talents unless they handle them in the right way, Matteo Moretto has warned.

Milan invested their faith in Francesco Camarda and Christian Comotto during the summer in two ways. First of all they made the decision not to loan the young Italian duo out, believing that they would get adequate playing time under Ruben Amorim.

Secondly, they handed each of them a long-term renewal until 2031, something that the owner Gerry Cardinale is believed to have pushed for to avoid repeats of the Mattia Liberali situation down the road. However, until now minutes have not been forthcoming.

Moretto’s warning to Milan

Matteo Moretto – in a video on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel – criticised the Portuguese coach for his questionable management of the young players. MilanNews relayed his comments.

“In July Comotto and Camarda renewed their contracts with Milan and the club put strong faith in them, both in terms of duration and salary. Cardinale has also given him a lot of faith, along with Amorim,” he began.

“The two players had offers in the summer. Comotto could have gone on loan to Genoa, Parma, or Bologna. Juventus would have even bought him. Camarda had Atalanta and Fiorentina. However, to date, the two players have found very little playing time.

“Each has only played eight minutes in all competitions, despite the possibility of playing against Lecce, which Milan had sealed, with the score at 3-0. However, Amorim chose to bring in Musah, who was coming off a very long playing time at the time, or Loftus-Cheek, whose contract is expiring.

“We really need to understand what kind of sporting project Milan wants for these two players, and more. Even Bartesaghi, who has been playing consistently for a season and a half, has lost his prominence and value at the start of the season.

“Amorim has often preferred Estupinan over him. The management of AC Milan’s young talents is debatable. It will be necessary to understand what kind of situation AC Milan wants to face between now and January, and how they intend to approach this management.

“Remember that Liberali went from his first-team debut to AC Milan’s Primavera team in a short time, only to then choose a different sporting project like that of Como. AC Milan risks financial losses with this type of management, and we already have examples.

“Lontani chose to go to Parma for free, Longoni chose to go to PSG. It’s not just a matter of disenchantment with the Rossoneri shirt, but also of financial and financial implications.

“Milan will have to decide whether to develop these two young players internally or externally, perhaps with loans. However, clearly, as Inter did with Pio Esposito, to enhance a player’s value, to allow him to get a certain amount of playing time, you also need to pay the clubs that develop them.

“Inter paid around €2.5m plus bonuses to develop Pio Esposito during his development years at Spezia. Milan is in this kind of historic phase in managing young players. We’ll see how things go between now and January, also in terms of the transfer market for Comotto and Camarda.”
