Marc Marquez reveals he cannot explain his motivation to keep racing in MotoGP

Marc Marquez’s relentless pursuit of MotoGP glory defies explanation, even to himself, as he continues to compete at the highest level despite enduring career-threatening injuries and setbacks. The six-time premier class champion, who reclaimed the crown in 2025 after a tumultuous period, remains an enigma in terms of motivation and resilience.

Known as the ‘Ant of Cervera’ during his dominant streak from 2013 to 2019 with Honda, Marquez’s reign was abruptly interrupted by a catastrophic crash at Jerez in 2020, which fractured his humerus and triggered a cascade of injuries and surgeries. His premature return from that injury led to four operations on his right arm over two years, casting doubt on his future in the sport.

Marquez initially contemplated retirement following a violent highside in Indonesia in 2022 but chose to persevere, switching allegiance from Honda to Ducati in pursuit of a seventh MotoGP title — a quest he ultimately fulfilled in 2025. Speaking candidly on MotoGP’s Helmets Off, Marquez admitted that maintaining the drive to continue racing is the greatest challenge he faces. “For me, the most difficult thing is [to] keep doing,” he confessed. “Win one time, the 22 MotoGP riders have the talent to do it. But to do many years in a row and keep going and keep with the same motivation, this is something that I don’t know how I did. I cannot answer.”

Even now, at 33, the Spaniard wrestles with the lingering effects of injuries, including ongoing issues with his right shoulder following a crash with Marco Bezzecchi in Indonesia last year. Reflecting on his journey, Marquez revealed a humbling shift in perspective. “I feel [like a] superhero before 2020. Then 2020 showed me, and I learned about it, that we are humans. One day we are here and another day we can be a different person.”

Detailing the toll of his physical battles, Marquez disclosed he has undergone seven surgeries on his right shoulder alone. “I feel it is what it is. I mean the rider decides where is the line,” he said. “Now I start to evaluate more the risk and that risk are the injuries and the crashes. I’m here and I’m competing because at the moment I didn’t give up on [the] mental side.”

Marquez acknowledged the unique dangers of MotoGP compared to other sports, emphasizing the constant risk assessment required to prolong his career. “I achieve already a lot but still I feel competitive and I know that if I won I can keep being competitive for some years, but we are not in a sport like soccer, like tennis. They are doing their 100%, but the risk is much lower. So you need to evaluate many things in MotoGP before your retirement. It’s closer than yesterday, yes, but when, I don’t know.”

Speculation about the length of Marquez’s career intensifies amid his delayed decision to sign a new two-year Ducati contract. Former MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso has predicted that Marquez may not complete the full term, suggesting he could retire as soon as 2027 if he secures the championship in 2026.
