Braintree boss Steve Pitt takes responsibility after defeat

The Iron boss delivered a brutally honest assessment after watching his side capitulate at the weekend and admitted he now has to reflect on the players at his disposal as well as his own situation.

Braintree have little time to dwell on the result, with Dagenham and Redbridge visiting tonight in National League South.

Pitt told the Braintree Town YouTube channel : “We’re not good enough and that’s the reality of the situation and, one way or another, that has to be addressed.

“I accept full responsibility for that performance and for that result.

“That’s on me, at the end of the day.

“I’m not going to talk about the players; let the performance do that for them.

“I won’t accept that and I won’t tolerate that.

“I’ll speak to the chairman and discuss where we go from here.”

Pitt admitted the manner of Braintree’s defeat at Farnham had given him plenty to consider.

The Iron conceded twice inside the opening seven minutes before eventually going down by six without reply, with Pitt particularly disappointed by the nature of the goals his side conceded.

“I think I’ve got to go away and reflect long and hard on the group of players I’ve got and where their capability lies,” he said.

“I’ve got to think about my own situation, I’ve got to talk to Lee [Harding] and, yeah, a lot of reflection.

“We shouldn’t be coming here and being on the end of that kind of scoreline.

“That’s not taking anything away from them but I thought the goals were all too easy from start to finish, and that includes the first two goals in the first seven minutes.

“Once we’d conceded the third goal, it was game over anyway but we just proceeded to capitulate thereafter.”

Pitt also issued an apology to the Braintree supporters who continued to back the team despite the heavy defeat.

And the Iron boss admitted he could hardly blame them if their patience with him was now being tested.

“I can’t offer you anything other than apologies to a group of fans who were fantastic, from start to finish, even at the end of the game and have backed me every step of the way, for the last two years,” he said.

“But if the roles were reversed, I certainly wouldn’t be backing me because that’s just not acceptable or good enough.

“I take responsibility because I put the group together and that’s totally and utterly unacceptable. It starts with me.”

Braintree have been drawn at home to Kettering Town in the FA Trophy second round.

The tie will take place on Saturday, November 14.
