The 10 longest unbeaten runs in Premier League history

Only one side has gone a full Premier League season without defeat. Going most of the campaign unbeaten is rare, which is worth remembering before you place a football bet on how long a team’s unbeaten run could last.

Nine of the 10 runs below came in title-winning seasons. The exception is Chelsea in 2007-08, who finished two points behind Manchester United.

Arsenal’s Invincibles set the bar at 49 games

Arsenal’s run began after a 3-2 home defeat to Leeds United on 4 May 2003. It covered the whole of 2003-04, when Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ won 26 and drew 12 of their 38 games. Across all 49 matches they won 36 and drew 13.

Manchester United ended it at Old Trafford on 24 October 2004, winning 2-0 through a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty and a late Wayne Rooney goal.

Liverpool come closest with 44

A 2-1 defeat at Manchester City on 3 January 2019 was Liverpool’s only league loss of 2018-19, and they still finished a point behind City on 97. Jurgen Klopp’s side then won 26 and drew one of their first 27 games of 2019-20.

Watford ended the run with a 3-0 win at Vicarage Road on 29 February 2020. Liverpool won the title anyway with 99 points.

Mourinho’s Chelsea go 40 games without defeat

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea lost 1-0 at Manchester City on 16 October 2004 and did not lose another league game for more than a year. The run carried them to the 2004-05 title with 95 points and 15 goals conceded, still a Premier League record.

A Darren Fletcher header gave Manchester United a 1-0 win at Old Trafford to end the run on 6 November 2005.

Guardiola’s City reach 32 on the way to four in a row

City lost 1-0 at Aston Villa on 6 December 2023, then went unbeaten through the rest of 2023-24 on the way to a record fourth straight title.

Bournemouth ended it with a 2-1 win on 2 November 2024. This was the first of four straight league defeats for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Arsenal and Manchester City share 30 games

Two sides sit level on 30. Arsenal’s began after a 3-1 home defeat by Newcastle United on 18 December 2001. They won their last 13 league games of 2001-02 and went the whole season unbeaten away from home. The run ended at Goodison Park on 19 October 2002, when a 16-year-old Wayne Rooney curled in a late Everton winner past David Seaman, two years before he helped end Arsenal’s even longer run.

Manchester City matched it 15 years later. They lost 2-1 at Chelsea on 5 April 2017, then opened 2017-18 with 20 wins and two draws from 22 games. Liverpool ended it with a 4-3 win at Anfield on 14 January 2018, scoring three times in nine second-half minutes, but City still finished the season on 100 points.

Three runs of 29 games

Three more runs finished on 29, and two of them belong to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. The first began after a 3-2 home defeat by Middlesbrough on 19 December 1998, and United did not lose another league game on the way to the Treble. Chelsea ended it emphatically, winning 5-0 at Stamford Bridge on 3 October 1999.

The roles were reversed nine years later. Chelsea’s own 29-game run, from December 2007 to October 2008, covered Avram Grant’s second-place finish and the start of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s reign. Liverpool ended it with a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on 26 October 2008 through a deflected Xabi Alonso shot. The same result ended Chelsea’s 86-game unbeaten home league record.

United’s second run started with a 2-1 home defeat by Chelsea on 3 April 2010, the result that effectively settled the 2009-10 title. They went unbeaten in their first 24 games of 2010-11 before bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers beat them 2-1 at Molineux on 5 February 2011. United still went on to win their 19th league title that season.

Slot’s Liverpool round out the 10

Arne Slot’s first season at Anfield began with a 1-0 home loss by Nottingham Forest on 14 September 2024. However, that was the Reds’ only early-season blip as it was another seven months before they tasted defeat.

Fulham ended it 3-2 at Craven Cottage on 6 April 2025, scoring three times in 14 first-half minutes. Liverpool sealed the title with four games to spare.

Manchester United in 2016-17 and Nottingham Forest in 1995 missed the cut, both on 25 games.
