Giorgi Nemsadze passes away aged 54 as tributes paid to Dundee icon

Nemsadze enjoyed a distinguished playing career that spanned more than two decades and earned widespread admiration in both Scotland and his native Georgia. The midfielder spent three years at Dundee after joining the club in 2000, becoming a key figure at Dens Park and captaining the side during one of the most memorable periods in the club's modern history under Ivano Bonetti.

A cultured and influential presence in midfield, Nemsadze featured alongside a number of high-profile players, including Argentine legend Claudio Caniggia. His contribution to the Dark Blues was recognised with induction into the Dundee Hall of Fame in 2010.

Away from Scottish football, Nemsadze was regarded as one of Georgia's most accomplished footballers. He won 69 international caps between 1992 and 2004 and captained his country, playing a significant role during the formative years of the national team following independence.

His club career also included spells with Hamburg, Trabzonspor, Grasshoppers and Reggiana, while he began and concluded his playing days with Dinamo Tbilisi. Following his retirement, he remained heavily involved in the game, serving as sporting director of Dinamo Tbilisi before moving into coaching with Georgia's youth national teams.

Nemsadze played an important role in the development of several emerging talents during his coaching career, including future Georgia star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Most recently, he was serving as head coach of the Georgian Under-18 national side.

Tributes have been paid from across the footballing world following news of his passing. Among them was Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who described Nemsadze's death as "a tremendous loss for Georgian football".

In a statement, Kobakhidze said: "As the former captain of Georgia's national team, an outstanding professional and a leader with a fighting spirit, he successfully represented both the national team and Georgian and foreign clubs.

"With his distinctive playing style and perseverance, he left a lasting mark on the history of Georgian sport."
