Gloucester City manager Daf Williams: The referee "buckled under the pressure" as Tigers exit FA Cup after Barrow replay

Daf Williams criticised the referee's performance as Gloucester City’s FA Cup journey came to an end as they lost 2-0 to Barrow in their fourth qualifying round replay at the KMM Energy Stadium on Tuesday night.

Goals from Thierry Latty-Fairweather and Arian Allen mean Barrow will make the trip to Gillingham in the first round proper.

City captain Keiran Thomas was shown a straight red card meaning he will miss the next three matches.

"You can argue if it's a red card or not, he clearly gets the ball, there's force behind it but he gets the whole ball," Williams said.

"I've got to be honest I thought the referee was absolutely awful in the second half, I called it at half-time and said he'd turn in the second half because of how much they were giving it in the fourth official's ear.

"I thought he's buckled under pressure but not only that decision, I thought his decision making in the second half was terrible."

Ashley Hemmings had a superb effort that almost opened the scoring for the Tigers, but his volley from range didn’t quite dip under the crossbar in time.

Thomas was sent off in the 58th minute for what the referee deemed a poor challenge on Innes Cameron, in an event that changed the tide of the game.

Barrow's opener came just five minutes later through Latty-Fairweather, who drove the ball home with power to put the ball past Sam Kane.

Allen sealed the deal for the visitors in the final minutes of the game by slotting the ball calmly into the back of the net to Kane's left.

"We are frustrated because we had chances again, but I thought the lads stood up to what is the most aggressive team in the National League.

"They're arguably got the best non-league manager and they've got some fantastic players.

"With the way the lads stood up to it I'm really proud of the football club."

While City's FA Cup journey is over, there is still plenty to play for with a busy schedule ahead for Williams' side.

"I think we had a really great cup run, I don't want anyone to be disappointed because we've got quite far.

"I think we've turned a corner, but we need to change where we are in the league there's no doubt about that.

"The league position is a bit misleading but the cup run has been a good distraction and it's going to help us going forward."
