Lewis Hamilton has claimed his first pole position for Ferrari and his first for more than three years at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The seven-time F1 champion beat Mercedes' George Russell by 0.009 seconds as the two drivers who can potentially stop Kimi Antonelli clinching the world title on Sunday locked out the front row.

Antonelli qualified fifth behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, but will start fourth because of a one-place penalty for the Dutchman.

The only way Antonelli can be prevented from winning the title is if Russell wins and the Italian finishes lower than ninth, or if Hamilton wins and Antonelli is out of the points.

Hamilton's pole is his first since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, three years and three months ago, and the 105th of his career.

He is the oldest driver to secure a pole since Mario Andretti for Ferrari at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix.

He and Russell both went out early for their first runs and had to watch as their rivals sought and failed to beat them.

Leclerc went first, falling short of Hamilton by 0.119secs. Antonelli was never on target but Verstappen was fastest of all after two sectors and on course to take pole.

But the Dutchman locked up into the hairpin in the stadium section and ruined his lap.

"Oh man, I'm lost for words," said Hamilton. "It's been a really challenging weekend - we had the engine issue yesterday, which meant we were on the back foot and didn't do a long run.

"We've done a really good job on the setup and to have pole here, wow, it feels special. It's my first pole for Ferrari, and 105th, I like that number.

"To have your first Ferrari pole, it takes me back to watching Michael [Schumacher] get all those poles when he was at Ferrari and all those wins."

Hamilton had been only fourth on the first runs, more than 0.4secs off Leclerc's pace-setting time. But on his final run, he said: "I don't think I lost any time anywhere. It was a super-good lap."

Russell, who said he was happy to have ended a run of difficult form but could not explain why, took a unilateral decision not to do a preparation lap after his out lap on his final run.

He said he had a "gut feeling" that it was the best approach, but the team had insisted on a prep lap and had fuelled the car for the extra mileage.

"[The time loss for the extra fuel weight is] such a small number," said Russell, "but it's bigger than the gap to pole. Nevertheless, I'm just happy to be up here."

McLaren's Lando Norris had looked in contention for pole on the first runs in the final session, when he was third fastest behind Leclerc and Verstappen.

But he failed to improve on his final lap and had to be satisfied with sixth.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, Racing Bulls pair Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad and Alpine's Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.

Fernando Alonso looked to be in contention for his best qualifying of the year for Aston Martin when he went fastest on his first lap of the session ahead of a number of cars that for most of the season have been ahead of him.

But his engine suffered a water leak in the energy recovery system as he started his second attempt, when he was still lying third, and he was ordered to stop the car on track.

Alonso's frustration after a year of poor performance and reliability from the Honda engine was clear in an interview with the official television channel afterwards, when he said a total of nine words in answer to four questions.

In those words, he confirmed it had been an engine problem, said "it was" a good opportunity and it was "correct" that the car has been looking good all weekend - but that he could not do anything in the race "from the back".
