The final 20 minutes may have been too close for comfort, but the New York Rangers won’t complain about the end result. The Blueshirts survived a third-period surge Saturday night, defeating the Seattle Kraken 4-3 at Climate Pledge Arena to claim their third straight regulation win.
Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves in his Rangers regular-season debut after missing the first month of the season on injured reserve with a foot infection. The 32-year-old blanked Seattle through two periods and stopped 10 of 13 shots in the third to earn his first win as a member of the Blueshirts.
New York might not be out of the woods just yet, though. Sean Durzi missed his fourth straight game with a lower-body injury, and Matthew Robertson made his regular-season debut Saturday after the Rangers scratched rookie defenseman Alberts Smits late with an upper-body injury.
Tye Kartye scored a power-play goal at 9:05 of the first period, stamping his return to Seattle after the club waived him on Feb. 26. His sixth goal of the season helped fuel a dominant start by New York, which chased Kraken starting goalie Joey Daccord just 13:53 into the game after a three-goal eruption in the opening frame.
Philipp Grubauer made 15 saves on 16 shots in 45:32 of ice time after relieving Daccord in the first period.
His only goal allowed came off the stick of Pavel Dorofeyev, who supplied the game-winner at 12:46 of the second period — at the time giving the Rangers a 4-0 lead. The Russian winger has now scored in two straight games and three of his last four.
Former Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko helped turn the tables in the third, scoring the first of three Kraken goals. Seattle outshot New York 13-4 and registered all seven high-danger chances in the frame, according to Natural Stat Trick.
But the Rangers escaped with the victory, thanks in part to a holding penalty on Seattle forward Berkly Catton at 17:34 of the third. New York improved to 5-0-1 inside Climate Pledge Arena and 8-2-1 all-time against the Kraken.
It didn’t take long to tell that the Rangers were buzzing early. New York jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of regulation.
Gabe Perreault opened the scoring just 1:35 after puck drop with a well-rounded sequence. The second-year forward made a strong play in the corner to help the Rangers maintain possession, then slid to the low slot and blasted a one-time feed from Mika Zibanejad over Daccord’s glove.
Kartye created New York’s second goal, drawing a holding penalty on Catton at 7:15 of the first. He scored twice on the ensuing power play — though only one counted. His first attempt was waved off for a distinct kicking motion after Kartye booted the puck through Daccord’s five-hole at 8:25 following a faceoff win from J.T. Miller. But the former Kraken found the back of the net 40 seconds later, deflecting a long shot from Adam Fox in the waning seconds of the man-advantage.
Jaroslav Chmelar knocked Daccord out of the game with his first goal of the season at 13:53, as New York once again capitalized on a strong forecheck in Seattle’s zone. A failed breakout attempt from Kraken forward Mackie Samoskevich wound up on Chemlar’s stick. He quickly fed Noah Laba at the right wing and crashed the net, cleaning up Laba’s rebound before Daccord could recover.
Grubauer stopped the first five shots he faced, but New York broke through against him in the second period. Two seconds after a Brandon Montour hooking penalty expired, Zibanejad sprung Dorofeyev free for a mini-breakaway with a nifty saucer pass. Dorofeyev hit the brakes in front of the net, dragged the puck from forehand to backhand, and slid it past the Seattle goalie’s left skate.
New York nearly added two more in the frame when a pair of wristers from Miller and Vladislav Gavrikov squeaked through Grubauer’s pads, but heads-up plays from defensemen Josh Mahura and Montour kept both shots from crossing the goal line.
Kakko ended Korpisalo’s shutout bid at 1:50 of the third period, on Seattle’s 18th shot of the game. The No. 2 overall pick from the 2019 NHL Draft collected a rebound at the left wing and swooped behind the net for a wrap-around goal before Korpisalo could slide over to the right post.
Kakko’s third goal and team-leading 13th point of the season sparked the Kraken to life.
Jordan Eberle cut the deficit to 4-2 at 6:38, converting against New York’s League-leading penalty kill with a backdoor tap-in off a sharp feed from Matty Beniers.
Seattle defenseman Vince Dunn made it 4-3 at 15:02, unleashing a one-timer from the left point that beat Korpisalo and rang the right post on the way in.
But the Kraken failed to record another shot on goal after Dunn made it a one-goal game. Catton’s penalty handed momentum back to the visitors, allowing the Rangers to dictate pace over the final few minutes of regulation.
New York continues its four-game West Coast swing on Monday against the Edmonton Oilers. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.
