Terry Bradshaw was known as the Blonde Bomber during his playing days when he helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win four Super Bowls, and he kind of lived up to that nickname during the opening segment of the Fox NFL Sunday show by dropping a truth bomb on the Buffalo Bills.
The FOX studio crew was discussing the day's upcoming games and Bradshaw discussed the AFC showcase matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.
"This is gonna be a fun game to watch," Bradshaw began harmlessly enough. "Last year, they played each other and the final score was 41-40, Buffalo. You got two great quarterbacks, all right?"
Yes, all right.
"Now you got [James] Cook, and then you got the great running back for the Baltimore Ravens, [Derrick] Henry. So you got great running backs, great quarterbacks, but here's the deal, no good defense," Bradshaw said.
Here we go.
"Buffalo's defense is horrible," Bradshaw then added looking into the camera. "And with [Lamar] Jackson back, I expect him to throw the football, play action, even though Lamar has a bad ankle. This game's gonna be fun to watch it.
"And if there's one thing I've learned from the NFL this season, if you don't have a great defense ... you're not going to win a Super Bowl. You may have a great offense, but you will not win a Super Bowl.
"Buffalo right now, fun to watch. Fun to watch. But they're not gonna win a Super Bowl."
Well, so three things could be happening next:
Firstly, Bills Mafia might be coming for Bradshaw. That is a practical certainty and the argument will center around the Bills being able to address their No. 30th ranked scoring defense or the offense being able to overcome that subpar defense.
Secondly, the Bills prove Bradshaw wrong on Feb. 14 when Super Bowl LXI is played.
Thirdly, Bradshaw is proven absolutely correct.
History is on Bradshaw's side.
No NFL team has has ever won a Super Bowl despite ranking in the bottom three in the regular-season in points allowed.
The worst scoring defense to win a Super Bowl was the 2011 New York Giants, who ranked 25th in points allowed, giving up 25 points per game. The next-worst were the 2006 Indianapolis Colts, ranked 23rd, and the 2009 New Orleans Saints, ranked 20th.
The Bills, under first-year head coach Joe Brady, have shown improvement on offense from a year ago, which is logical since Brady is an offense-minded coach.
Conversely, losing Sean McDermott, who was a defense-minded coach, has apparently hurt the team on that side of the ball.
