Chad Gable Is Quietly Having a Huge Title Run
Chad Gable Is Quietly Having a Huge Title Run
WWE

Chad Gable has held the WWE Intercontinental Championship for 80 days, and the numbers behind his reign show how active a champion he has been.

Gable won the title from Penta on night two of SummerSlam on August 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Wrestling in front of his home state crowd, Gable reversed a second Mexican Destroyer attempt into the Ankle Lock and made Penta tap out. It was the first Intercontinental Championship win of his career.

He earned that title shot the hard way. On the July 13 episode of Raw in Dallas, Gable won a number one contender’s gauntlet match that lasted more than 38 minutes, getting past Dominik Mysterio, Dragon Lee, Ethan Page, Je’Von Evans, Joe Hendry and Rusev.

Since winning the title, Gable has defended it four times on Raw, which works out to a televised title match every 20 days. He beat Rey Mysterio on the August 17 episode in Buffalo, Dragon Lee on the September 14 episode in Mexico City and Rey Fenix on the October 12 episode in Bossier City, Louisiana. Most recently, he retained in a triple threat against Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio on the October 19 episode in San Diego.

Those were not short matches either. According to Cagematch, the Fenix match ran 18 minutes and 35 seconds, the first Dragon Lee match went 15 minutes and 39 seconds, and the triple threat lasted 15 minutes and 35 seconds. The Mysterio match on August 17 went just over 13 minutes.

The televised defenses are only part of the picture. Cagematch lists 13 more successful defenses at live events since SummerSlam, bringing his total to 17 without a loss. He defended against Ethan Page several times on WWE’s summer tour, beat Dominik Mysterio in both a singles match and a triple threat in Canada, and won four straight fatal four-way matches against Dragon Lee, Ethan Page and Penta on the South America tour in September. He also defended the title at two NXT live events in the Carolinas against Saquon Shugars and Uriah Connors, and won a three-way against Ethan Page and Je’Von Evans in Honolulu on October 16.

That works out to a title defense roughly every five days since SummerSlam.

The run is also the payoff to a long chase. Gable came up short against Sami Zayn in multiple Intercontinental Championship matches in 2024, including a match at Clash at the Castle in June that year that lasted more than 22 minutes. Two years later, he finally got the title in his home state.

Why Chad Gable’s Intercontinental Title Reign Stands Out

alt

Gable’s reign is a throwback to the way a midcard title is supposed to be booked. He is defending the championship on television on a regular basis, he is doing it against a mix of veterans and younger stars, and the matches are getting real time on Raw. Four televised defenses in 80 days is a steady pace for a secondary title, and the live event defenses show he is putting the belt on the line nearly every time he works.

It also matters who he is beating. Rey Mysterio, Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix are some of the best workers on Raw, and Gable’s style matches up well with each of them. Those matches have made the Intercontinental Championship feel like one of the more important parts of the show, which is what a strong champion should do.

The question is who ends it. Gable has beaten nearly every realistic contender on Raw at least once, so WWE will either need to build up a new challenger or let him keep stacking defenses. Either way, the longer this reign goes, the more the eventual title change will mean, and Gable has already done enough to make this one of the better Intercontinental Championship runs in recent years.
