Bruno Fernandes makes promise to Michael Carrick

Manchester United’s midfield has become a source of frustration during a season in which the club’s biggest names have struggled to impose themselves consistently.

Bruno Fernandes remains one of the team’s most influential players in the squad.

His leadership has become even more important as Michael Carrick attempts to restore confidence in a squad that has repeatedly failed to deliver results.

United’s recent performances have also raised questions about their pressing structure, with opponents finding opportunities to play right through the team.

The 4-1 defeat to Como brought those tactical concerns into the open, particularly after Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the decision not to press opponents man-to-man.

Fernandes has now reassured Carrick that he remains fully committed to helping Manchester United turn their season around, following a private meeting at Carrington on Tuesday, as reported by The Guardian.

The pair held clear-the-air talks before training, with the midfielder understood to have told his manager that he wants to help put the club’s season back on track.

The captain is consequently expected to return to the starting line-up against Chelsea on Saturday.

Tuesday’s discussions extended beyond the captain, with the entire squad also meeting Carrick and reportedly expressing a collective determination to improve results.

The developments offer the head coach some breathing room, although he still needs wins to secure his future.

United’s decision to retain Carrick for the Chelsea fixture also comes against a difficult financial backdrop.

Director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada opted to give him more time, while Eddie Howe has emerged as Wilcox’s preferred potential replacement.

However, appointing the former Newcastle manager would reportedly cost United around £3 million in compensation, with additional costs associated with his coaching staff.

United would also need to finalise a successor before removing Carrick, meaning an immediate managerial change would involve both financial and logistical considerations.

Saturday’s clash at Stamford Bridge presents Carrick and Fernandes with an immediate opportunity to show that their differences have been put aside.
