Chelsea transfer news: Alonso sends Estevao message, Trent signing depends on departure, and more

The January transfer window is still a couple of months away, but Chelsea are already being linked with some big moves in both directions.

Xabi Alonso could have several decisions to make when the market opens, with the Blues reportedly keeping tabs on defensive reinforcements while questions remain over the futures of a few familiar faces.

There is also some welcome news for supporters worried about losing one of the club's brightest young talents.

Here's everything you need to know about Chelsea's latest transfer news.

Estevao going nowhere in January

Chelsea fans will be relieved to hear that Estevao is not expected to leave Stamford Bridge in January, despite his frustrating lack of playing time this season.

The Brazilian has managed just 172 minutes of football so far, leading to growing frustration among supporters who want to see more of him in Alonso's side. There have even been calls for the teenager to be sent out on loan to get regular first-team football.

However, Alonso has firmly dismissed that possibility, confirming that there have been no discussions about a January departure.

The Chelsea manager also insisted that Estevao will get his opportunities as the season progresses, suggesting that his limited involvement is down to the circumstances of games rather than any concerns over his attitude.

Although positive news, Alonso now needs to turn those promises into minutes. Chelsea cannot afford to leave a talent like Estevao watching from the sidelines for much longer.

Jarrad Branthwaite on the Blues' radar

Chelsea could also be preparing another major investment in their defence, with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite reportedly emerging as a serious target.

The English defende has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign after an injury-disrupted previous season, attracting attention from several clubs; Chelsea included.

According to reports, the Blues are considering a move for Branthwaite within the next 12 months as Alonso looks to strengthen his defensive options.

The 24-year-old's Premier League experience, physical presence and left-footed profile make him an attractive option. However, Everton are under no pressure to sell, having tied him down to a contract until 2030.

A reported valuation of around £80million would also make this a particularly expensive deal. Chelsea may be interested, but convincing Everton to part with one of their most important players will be another matter entirely.

Trent Alexander-Arnold a genuine target

Perhaps the most eye-catching transfer story involves Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Chelsea's interest reportedly becoming increasingly serious.

According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, the Blues are genuinely considering a move for the England international as they look to replace Malo Gusto at right-back.

Alexander-Arnold has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Spain, potentially opening the door to a Premier League return.

His exceptional passing range and crossing ability would offer Alonso something different, particularly when Chelsea are trying to break down stubborn defences.

However, as mention above, any potential move is closely connected to Gusto potentialy leaving. With Reece James increasingly being used in midfield and the Frenchman reportedly available for transfer, Chelsea could be preparing for a significant change in that position.

Nothing is imminent, but this is certainly one to keep an eye on.

Malo Gusto could be the next big name sold

Finally, on the subject of Gusto's Chelsea future becoming increasingly uncertain, Manchester City are reportedly among the clubs monitoring his situation.

The Frenchman has continued to receive opportunities under Alonso despite growing speculation that he could leave in January. That has raised questions about why Chelsea are still giving him valuable minutes when other young players are waiting for their chance.

There are practical reasons for his involvement, particularly with James unavailable again and Josh Acheampong and Marco Palestra still getting up to speed. Gusto also offers considerably more first-team experience than those alternatives.

However, Chelsea will need to consider their long-term plans. If the club genuinely expects to sell the 23-year-old, giving more opportunities to players who could form part of its future would make sense.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold on the radar, Gusto's situation is one of the more interesting transfer stories to follow as January approaches.
