Carlos Adames Zuffa Debut Draws Fan Criticism

Carlos Adames’ reported Zuffa Boxing debut against Gerome Warburton is drawing criticism from fans who see the Welsh fighter as an underwhelming opponent for the WBC middleweight champion.

According to Dan Rafael, Adames will face Warburton in the November 14 main event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The bout will take place above 160 pounds, with Adames’ WBC title not at stake.

For Zuffa, signing Adames brings an established champion into its middleweight roster. However, introducing him against Warburton gives fans little opportunity to judge him against one of the division’s leading contenders. It looks like an opportunity for Adames to collect a win and make an impression before moving toward a bigger fight.

Warburton, 31, has an 18-2-2 record with two knockouts. That limited knockout total helps explain the reaction to his selection. Adames is accustomed to facing world-level opposition, and Warburton has yet to prove he belongs in that company.

His fourth-round stoppage loss to Kieron Conway in May 2025 is another reason fans are questioning the matchmaking. Conway beat him at British and Commonwealth level. Now Warburton is being brought in to headline against a reigning world champion.

There is some recent form in Warburton’s favor. He has won three consecutive fights since that defeat, including victories over Nathan Heaney in March and September this year. Those results deserve recognition when discussing how he landed this opportunity.

Nonetheless, beating Heaney twice does not establish Warburton as one of the best middleweights available. Adames represents a much higher level, and the pressure will be on the champion to produce a performance that reflects that difference.

A quick stoppage would give Zuffa a highlight to promote. A long, competitive fight could bring more criticism of Adames and raise questions about what this debut achieved.

The matchup gives Warburton a major opportunity. Adames has considerably less to gain.
