Tiger Woods hasn't competed in a tournament since the 2024 Open Championship, but rumors are swirling about a potential comeback at the Hero World Challenge, with three field exemptions still to be revealed.
Woods hinted at a possible Masters return in 2026 after participating in TGL following back surgery in October. However, things took a sharp turn for the worse when he crashed his vehicle and was charged with a DUI just days after missing a putt in the TGL finals.
Following a rehabilitation program, he's been spotted in public more frequently, with the 50-year-old demonstrating his abilities at Monterey Peninsula Country Club last week. Woods was observed hitting golf balls on the driving range at the facility, impressing fans watching from beyond the barriers. Given this appearance, fans are optimistic that one of the exemption positions in the tournament, which he hosts, will be awarded to Woods despite his announcement that he was stepping away from the sport at the time of the car accident in March.
"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," Woods said. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery."
Woods traveled abroad briefly to recuperate, and authorities discovered opioids in his possession at the time of the crash. "I'm committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally," he continued.
"I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."
The Hero World Challenge field is currently set at just 17 people, while the three exemptions will be announced at a later date. It includes World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Players Championship winner Cameron Young, European star Matt Fitzpatrick, and fan-favorite Justin Thomas.
Having triumphed at the event on five occasions, Woods has regularly been on hand to personally present the trophy to the champion. Last year's tournament winner Hideki Matsuyama revealed that he has always looked up to the legendary golfer.
"Tiger is my idol," said Matsuyama following the 2025 win.
"Nine years ago (when I first won the Hero World Challenge) was the first time I was able to take pictures with Tiger and I want to take pictures with Tiger more. That's why I play well at Tiger's events."
