After moving on from long-time head coach John Harbaugh, NFL fans were ready to see the Baltimore Ravens take the next step, hiring former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to take his spot. While Lamar Jackson’s injury has hampered Baltimore early, the defense has also fallen short of expectations, a notable concern given Minter’s reputation as a defensive coach.

After the Bengals scored 35 unanswered points in the second half of the Ravens’ Week 7 loss, the NFL world ripped into Minter after the Ravens’ first-half shutout vanished.

After Tyler Huntley was able to lead the Ravens to a 13-0 first-half lead, it looked like Baltimore was cruising to an AFC North win over the Bengals. However, quarterback Joe Burrow and Cincinnati exploded for 35 points in the second half as the Ravens failed to score another point.

After the 35-13 loss to the Bengals, fans were quick to tear into Minter following the second-half collapse, with this user explaining, “Mike Macdonald almost always had an answer for the Bengals and Joe Burrow when he was the Ravens’ DC. The Ravens hired Jesse Minter because of his own defensive aptitude. Answers were there in the 1st half. They’re gone now.”

Another fan couldn’t help but think that the decision to hire Minter, following the franchise’s decision to part ways with longtime head coach John Harbaugh, was a step sideways.

The fan posted a video and said, “The Ravens are going from John Harbaugh to Jesse Minter.”

Another user had harsher words for the Ravens’ first-year head coach, saying, “Ravens are simply not a good team. Jesse Minter is simply not a good head coach. Ain’t no fixing this [expletive].”

This user couldn’t help but agree with the fact that the Ravens have struggled under Minter so far this year, but at least found a way to find a silver lining in their eyes, posting, “Because Jesse Minter is not a serious head coach, he’s Harbaugh Jr without the stupid face.”

In fact, many fans felt the Ravens didn’t really make a difference in their head coaching decision after moving on from Harbaugh after an 18-year stint, with this fan posting a clip of the Ravens booth from the game against the Bengals, saying, “Ravens fans realizing Jesse Minter is John Harbaugh 2.0.”

But this fan had enough of the talk and chatter and won’t be satisfied until the new Ravens staff starts showing consistency, saying, “Don’t talk to me about ‘Jesse Minter.’ Don’t talk to me about ‘Declan Doyle.’ EVERYBODY GOTTA PROVE THEMSELVES TO ME AGAIN.”

The Ravens, who rank 18th on PFN’s Defense Impact Metric, will hope to get Jackson back in Week 8 at Buffalo after he was listed as questionable for Cincinnati before being ruled out a day before kickoff.

However, the defense will be an area to watch, as Baltimore has found itself in a few shootouts this season.
