‘A Course Called Ireland’ is alive in a brand new way

Every golfer knows it.

Tom Coyne’s A Course Called Ireland is one of the greatest books ever written about the game we all love, and for so many people it served as a gateway to Irish golf and links golf as a whole.

Personally, I was introduced to Coyne’s book and fell in love with the idea of links golf as a whole after his work with No Laying Up on their Ireland season of Tourist Sauce. I often think about what Coyne said in the trailer for that season as a perfect way to describe how and why links golf is so awesome.

“So… there’s something about playing golf in that setting. In the dunes. That’s where golf starts. So there’s something about, when you get to play a links course, that you’re actually playing the golf in the iteration in which it began… I just think that there’s something very pure about that kind of golf, that demands a lot of imagination. It requires you to think about so many different things… it’s addictive, man.”

Given that Coyne authored, quite literally, links golf in my own and so many others’ imaginations it was incredibly exciting to learn that A Course Called Ireland was receiving new life by way of a six-episode documentary series that premiered this week on Paramount+. Coyne was even gracious enough to join me to discuss some of the details of what went into it all.

The juxtaposition that I find so fascinating here, one that served as my final question to Tom, was about how golf in places like Ireland has become the thing for so many people. So many golfers have made it their all-time dream. Isn’t there something beautifully ironic about the mecca being the very beginning of the game?

Golf is great because it teaches (and reminds!) us of lessons like these. Sometimes we have to go back in time to figure out who we are in the present and what we want the future to look like. In many ways golf, particularly links golf, is the adventure of a lifetime in that sense.

If there is any real-life adventure that captures that spirit it is A Course Called Ireland in this new form and the guide throughout it all is perfect for the cause in Bill Murray. You can watch the trailer for the documentary below.

You can partake in the adventure yourself now by way of Paramount+.

Enjoy the ride.
