Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has confirmed that he has no intention of leaving the club, despite strong historical interest from Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Article continues under the videoThe Spain international was heavily linked with a blockbuster move following his exploits at the 2024 European Championship, but a deal never materialised and he eventually signed a lucrative new contract at San Mames 12 months later.
Williams’ deal at Athletic Club now runs until 2034 and it appears as though an exit has been ruled out, with Barcelona opting to sign Anthony Gordon this summer and Arsenal strengthening their roster with Christos Tzolis.
Earlier this month, Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta, confirmed that his client was interested in leaving Athletic Club amid substantial transfer interest, but the 24-year-old has now hit back at such remarks.
“I felt good, you could see it on the field, I'm doing everything I can. The external noise doesn't affect me, I want to help Athletic win,” Williams told reporters after a 4-0 win over Getafe on Sunday (via AS).
“My brother [Inaki] was clear in what he said (about Tainta’s comments). It's difficult when your name is involved in that kind of thing. Felix was wrong with what he said; things aren't like that.
“The final decision is made by me, my brother, and the family. What happens at home, only the three of us know. I've never doubted being here; I've had countless offers, I've been able to leave, and I've always been clear about staying here.
“My intention to be here cannot be doubted. I told Barca, Arsenal, PSG, and many others ‘no’ because I want to be here. I hope people understand.”
With a move for Williams now highly unlikely to take place, Arsenal will be forced to pursue an alternative left winger next year, with the club eager to bolster their attacking roster following the sale of Gabriel Martinelli to Saudi Arabia.
Juventus star Kenan Yildiz is believed to be among their top targets, while Brentford’s Kevin Schade and Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi are also on Arsenal’s transfer radar.
The Gunners were interested in an ambitious move for Liverpool starlet Rio Ngumoha too, but the England international has confirmed that he is in contract talks with Andoni Iraola’s side and a sale will therefore not be sanctioned.
