Analyst thinks the 2026 Minnesota Vikings' defense could be historic

The Minnesota Vikings' defense has been one of the league's best through six weeks. At 5-0, the Vikings rank 2nd in total yards allowed, 1st in EPA/play allowed, and 1st in defensive DVOA. They are allowing 12.8 points per game, 3.8 fewer than the next-closest team (Chiefs, 16.6).

Questions remain about how good Minnesota's offense can be. They rank 27th in yards per game and are tied for 24th in EPA/play. But as long as the defense keeps performing as well as it has, the Vikings have a chance to contend in the NFC.

That could put Minnesota's defense in historic company. On Check The Mic, Sam Monson speculated that the Vikings have the potential to be mentioned among the greatest defenses in NFL history.

"It's interesting because it's the most extreme scheme in the NFL, but it's doubly interesting because it is suddenly producing what is on pace to be an all-time great defense," Monson told co-host Steve Palazzolo last week. "All these defenses, [the] 2000 Ravens, 2015 Broncos, whatever, like all the defenses you can think of that have been amazing, 2013 Seahawks, [the] Vikings are currently on pace to be better than them, right? So this is the reason that Flores is getting so much focus, is that it's the most extreme scheme in the NFL, and it is also all of a sudden producing like the best defense we've seen in the last 30 years."

There are still 12 games to go, but Minnesota has already won two division games and still holds a 1.5-game lead over both the Packers and Bears. The Vikings face a tough gauntlet, with games against the Lions, Bills, Packers, and 49ers looming after this week's matchup against the reeling Colts.

We should have a good idea of just how good Minnesota is after that stretch. If they come out of it with at least an 8-2 record, the Vikings' defense will have likely done its job.
